Recharge House

The wind whips the waves, the clouds loom low—suddenly, the sky burst wide open: What could be more awe-inspiring to watch than that? The natural spectacle that’s so typical of the Danish North Sea coast seems almost staged at the Recharge House in Agger. That’s exactly what architect Søren Sarup had in mind: A house with an omnipresent view of nature, its proximity to the water, wind, open sky and natural light. Together with the owners Anders Petersen and Rasmus Johnsen, who are also builders, a modern architect’s house has been created here that lives up to its name. Come and recharge on the Danish North Sea coast, where floor-to-ceiling windows offer a view of nature . With Flat Lake just a few meters away, it’s about 600 meters to the North Sea. And right next door is Thy National Park with its breathtaking scenery. Water and sky. Peace and harmony. Sometimes, when the wind is not blowing, you can listen to your own breath here. The Recharge House is very aptly named—you can recharge in this place like no other. The beautifully situated accommodation is divided into a larger main house and an outbuilding. The two are connected by a surrounding terrace, which measures a generous 130 square meters and is also equipped with an outdoor shower and sauna—known as the green sauna. Green, because its large window on the south side provides an unobstructed view of beautiful fir trees. The whole construction was inspired by the compelling desire to create a seamless connection between inside and out. The peaceful surroundings were to be transported into the living space. This has been achieved with great success—the transitions are almost fluid. Occupants here become one with nature and that’s exactly what architect Søren Sarup intended. Situated on the west coast of Denmark, the Recharge House is an impressive retreat whose form is reminiscent of the traditional Danish farmhouses, greatly admired in this location for centuries. They, too, are characterized by clean lines, lots of wood and brightness. And speaking of wood, the striking cedar cladding exudes a wonderfully warm charm even from the outside. You could almost call it Sarup’s signature look and it’s a sure recipe for maximum well-being.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The atmospherically furnished main house with large windows lets light into every corner. It has an open living area equipped with a fireplace, modern kitchen, dining area and there’s a sensational bedroom.
  • The annex to the east of the main house with two beautiful bedrooms and a bathroom is easily on par with the rest of the house.
  • The closeness to nature and its appreciation is reflected in every detail—even the well-chosen designer furniture is all sustainable and made of recycled materials.
  • Skipping through the dunes before breakfast and jumping into the water—the beach is only 450 m away from the house.
  • The name says it all! The idea of resting and replenishing energy is taken very seriously here and is a common theme throughout your visit. The mattresses, comforters and pillows come from Bedre Nætter, a trendy Scandinavian natural bed brand, which promises wonderfully restful sleep.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • The accommodation is located on the edge of the Thy Danish National Park and is, as you would expect, surrounded by untouched and protected nature.
  • The national park offers lots to see and is a paradise for birds of all kinds. There is also Lodbjerg lighthouse, built in 1883, located about four and a half kilometers north of the house, standing in the middle of an expanse of heathland.
  • Water is almost omnipresent—north of the house is a 485-hectare shallow lake, west is the North Sea.
  • The most popular surf spots in Northern Europe are located here on the Danish west coast—insiders often refer to this area as “Cold Hawaii”.
  • For sporty types the area is perfect for cycling, hiking and surfing.
  • The house is only available on a weekly basis.
  • Address: Mågevej 35, 7770 Vestervig
