Weingut Schmid Oberrautner

It was in 1363 that Ullin am Raut took over a vineyard from the neighboring monastery of Freising (today’s Muri-Gries). In 1411, Andrä Schmid am Geraut built a small holding with farm and residential building exactly on this spot, parts of which still exist today, thereby laying the foundation—believe it or not—for the following 21 generations! Livestock farming, fruit growing and viticulture—the traditional winery in the heart of Bolzano has already seen a lot of action. In 1898, Anton Schmid obtained a trade license to deal in fruit and wine. Then, in 1969, Andreas Schmid took over the management of the winery and, with his new striving for quality, left a lasting mark on the profile of the business. Today, about 70,000 bottles of wine are produced here annually, from about nine hectares of mostly family-owned vineyards. Exciting anecdotes are regularly recounted here from the more than 600 years of history witnessed in this place. In the meantime, Florian and Judith Schmid continue the family legacy with passion, drive and innovative ideas. It’s also thanks to them that it’s now even possible to take a vacation in the middle of this place steeped in history: Three beautiful, lovingly restored and stylishly furnished vacation apartments invite you to succumb to the rural flair, leave everything behind and enjoy the wonderful hospitality of the winegrowing family. Ullin, Katharina and Antonia—the three special houses which owe their names to important family members—exude impressive historic charm with beautiful wooden floors, beams, stone walls and handmade furniture. These are truly modern hideaways housed in ancient walls, ranging from 31 to 42 square meters in size. A dream come true—guaranteed not only for wine lovers!

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • Experience city flair and country idyll at the same time—and with one of the oldest winegrowing families in South Tyrol? You can with Schmid Oberrautner!
  • The grandiose mixture of historical ambience and modern lifestyle in the lavishly restored accommodation
  • The old wine cellar, whose origins date back to the Gothic era—it’s almost impossible not to be in awe when you enter it.
  • The beautiful garden, where you can find a favorite spot in the sun or in the shade whenever you like; moreover, you can help yourself to the home-grown delights to your heart’s content: Vegetables, fruits and herbs of all kinds.
  • The farm store with a range of sparkling wine and other wines, homemade regional specialties and a small, fine selection of delicious treats such as jams, herbal salt, herbal tea from the garden, dried fruits or syrup. It’s a perfect place to find great souvenirs for those back home.
  • Those who have fallen in love with the fine wines can always reorder some in the online store.
  • The mixture of culture, city, country, mountain, valley and lake is sensational and really has something to offer everyone.

  • The old town of Bolzano is also within easy walking distance of the winery with its many stores, boutiques, historic squares, restaurants and cafés.
  • A tour of the Dolomites from Bolzano and an excursion to the Alpe di Siusi, the largest alpine pasture in Europe (about 40 minutes by car) is well worth it—you’ll be rewarded with the most breathtaking panoramas.
