Vesterlandet

Maybe it's the wild, beautiful Thy National Park, or the fjords, lakes, and dunes. Maybe it's the near-perfect surfing conditions or the wonderful air that revitalizes you with every breath. Whatever it is, there is something magical about the West Jutland fishing village of Agger that attracts surfers, creative professionals and individualists from all over Europe. One of those visitors is the Danish architect Søren Sarup, who spends part of the year, together with his family, in Agger, and who constantly finds new, exciting projects in the region. His most recent one was converting a former farm along the coast, right on the border to the national park and only 150 meters from the North Sea. He and his wife Maria Louise preserved much of the old estate’s original building material, combining it impressively with ultra-modern architecture. The result is a building that fits perfectly into the surroundings, one in which a restaurant, an ice cream parlor, offices and two flats have found a home. The two flats, both about 29m², are actually designed for two people each, but a family with a small child can also feel completely at home here. The rooms are open and bright, and the large windows in particular ensure that a lot of light streams into the interior. Those who long for the wide open spaces of coastal Denmark can simply open the door to the private courtyard, with its outdoor furniture, pretty plants and an outdoor shower. This courtyard – as is so often the case at Sarup – blurs the boundaries between inside and outside, and creates a sense of unbounded freedom. Experience the magic of Agger with a visit to the village – and plan a stay at Vesterlandet.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The tranquility that emanates from this place grips you as soon as you arrive – perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the city, working undisturbed (the adjoining office space can also be booked), or just sitting back and dreaming.
  • The exterior greets you with clean lines, lots of wood, concrete and glass: despite its modernization, the former farmhouse is deeply rooted in its surroundings and clearly focuses on the essentials.
  • In the evening, the ingenious lighting concept is impressive, showing once again that every detail here has been carefully taken into consideration.
  • The two flats are furnished with modern Danish furniture classics, the walls are decorated with unobtrusive pictures that pick up on the natural color scheme and invite you to slow down.
  • Showering under the open sky – an experience in summer or in winter! Be sure to try it out.
  • The care products in the bathrooms come from the young Danish brand Skandinavisk; their SKOG line (Swedish and Norwegian for forest) chosen by the hosts smells of fir trees, pine cones, and lilies of the valley.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • While you’re there, treat yourself to the excellent menu at the gourmet restaurant Tri – according to the Danish Gastro Guide, they have the best fish and seafood.
  • The beautiful Thy National Park lies right next to Vesterlandet; its forests, lakes, limestone slopes, and dunes are perfect for long hikes or bike tours, like to the Lodbjerg Fyr lighthouse.
  • For those who prefer the water, there’s kayaking, kite surfing, surfing (the coast is nicknamed "Cold Hawaii“) or contemplative fishing trips on the North Sea.
  • From Agger we recommend great day trips to Aarhus (approx. 2 h 20 min by car) or to Aalborg (approx. 2 hours by car).
  • baby beds can be booked for an extra charge
