Milla Montis
Even from the outside, the Hotel Milla Montis in Meransen stands out from the run of the mill Alpine hotels. Without completely breaking with the South Tyrolean style, architect Peter Pichler designed the new building as a successful blend of tradition and modernity. The facade of black larch wood, for example, is reminiscent of a hay barn typical for the region. This contrasts with the round recesses and large glazed frontage that extends over four slightly offset parts of the building. They not only give the building a futuristic look from the outside, but also create unusual views for guests in the thirty double rooms and suites inside. The rooms are conceptualized as retreats, natural materials bring the surroundings into the building. Some have their own sauna; all have a terrace or loggia for extended periods of Dolomite watching. In the restaurant, hotel owner and chef Roland Oberhofer also enjoys having guests watch his kitchen. Thanks to the open-plan design, they can be at the scene while he conjures up menus from regional ingredients using old family recipes. Roland grew up in kitchens; he cooked professionally for the first time at fifteen at his parents establishment the Untermüllerhof in Meransen. They actively supported him and his wife Franziska on their way to owning their own hotel. Franziska was also born to be a hostess—she grew up on an organic farm with vacation apartments. With passion, soul and creativity, the two have succeeded in creating a modern take on Alpine tourism with the Milla Montis. As a guest you feel pampered with extraordinary architecture, culinary delights, a warm-hearted welcome and the beautiful natural surroundings, the mere sight of which provide instant relaxation.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- “Reinterpreting roots” was the theme of the architectural competition that Franziska and Roland Oberhofer announced for their hotel. Peter Pichler’s design hits the mark perfectly, combining style and tradition.
- The location of the four-star hotel at 1,300 meters offers fantastic views of the Dolomites.
- Regionality is writ large at the Milla Montis. This begins with the building materials and ends in the preparation of the food. The grain for the home-baked bread, for example, is a genuine South Tyrolean ancient grain.
- Every detail in the spa is just right, from the black slate floors to the tasteful wooden loungers.
- After an invigorating Kneipp session in the Alpine stream and a sauna, you can relax in the wonderfully fragrant hay room. In summer, there are also loungers in the garden.
- The infinity pool offers a fantastic view of the surrounding meadows and mountains.
- The rooms are fitted with a custom made ash wood floor, which makes walking barefoot a pleasure.
- Alpine cuisine meets Italian dolce vita—this is how the food of Roland Oberhofer can be described. Meat comes from animal-friendly suppliers, fresh fruit and vegetables are from neighboring farmers. A wonderful way to live!
- Those who want to take home some traditional knowledge of dishes, including preparation methods, can attend bread baking workshops.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- The kitchen can accommodate dietary requirements and also serves gluten-free dishes, for example.

- All guests are provided with a wellness bag with a cozy bathrobe and sauna towel for the duration of their stay.
- A meditation room is the ideal retreat for inner reflection.
- Hiking and mountain bike trails start right at the hotel. The Gitschberg Jochtal ski area with five lifts offers 55 kilometers of slopes and a view of more than 500 peaks.
- The Novacella Abbey, a 900-year-old place of faith and culture is only 15 kilometers away, in Neustift.
- The website has tailor-made packages on offer—for those seeking peace and quiet as well as those who are more active.
