Moosham 13

Sustainable, minimalist, clean, but please don’t sacrifice comfort and design—that’s the motto of Verena Bogner-Windorfer and Reinhold Windorfer, who have fulfilled their dream in the small village of Moosham in the Bavarian Forest. They were born here, moved away for studies and work, and finally returned, because it’s just so beautiful here. Together, they have taken over the basic substance of their parents’ four-sided farm, which has been in the family for seven generations, and lovingly renovated it. The old and the new generation—both should have their place and both should be reflected in the architecture. And so, between the large residential house (where two remarkable vacation apartments have been created) and the barn, a narrow, young, cheeky building with oversized panoramic windows has been inserted, lending the ensemble an exciting modernity. This houses the staircase with access to the loft apartment of the owners and the two vacation apartments of Moosham 13 on the first floor and the second floor. Both vacation apartments are furnished with lots of untreated light spruce wood from the owners’ own forest, plastered snow-white with natural lime, and feature a jet-black kitchenette and a walk-in wooden cube where the bathroom is located. Through the traditional farmhouse windows from times gone by, you look out over wide meadows and plenty of nature of the surrounding Bavarian Forest. Once here, you’ll want to start hiking right away, and breathe in the fresh scent of the meadows and forests. If you want to change your perspective, you can do so on a treetop path as well as a forest treetop path in the vicinity. In winter, Moosham 13 is the starting point for wonderful walks through an enchanted winter wonderland.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The two vacation apartments in Moosham 13 have kept their beautiful windows as the only reference to their rural origins, everything else is white, and straightforward with very clean lines; even the fireplace is plastered white.
  • The matte black designer kitchen counter is a great contrast and looks very classy.
  • The bathroom is housed in a wooden cube—très chic!
  • The owners own spruce wood was used for the floorboards and the walls of the bathroom cube. It is planted, felled, planed, milled and laid (and smells heavenly) by the owners.
  • From both apartments, you look out onto a huge meadow.
  • The house is heated with its own wood.
  • Solar energy and the self-sufficient garden, where guests can get guided tours, underline the principle of sustainability.
  • The Soley chairs by Valdimar Hardarson for Kusch & Co look great and match the respective dining tables perfectly.
  • Here you are on vacation on a real four-sided farm.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Both apartments are designed for two guests; the sofa bed can be pulled out as a children’s bed.
  • Both apartments can be connected and offer space for nine guests.
  • The two guest apartments consist of one room each; in the middle is the wooden box (with bathroom) which allows the apartment to be divided into different areas and used flexibly; the table may be moved sometimes, too.
  • Breakfast can be booked.
  • In the big garden, there’s a barbecue.
  • The hosts are enthusiastic foodies and are happy to share their tips; there is no shortage of interesting culinary options in the area, from classic modern interpretations of inn cuisine to Michelin-starred restaurants.
  • Great starting point for hikes through the original Bavarian Forest National Park, for example, to the Brotjacklriegel, the Großer Arber and the Großer Falkenstein
  • Two ways of exploring the forest, also from above: Waldwipfelweg in Sankt Englmar and the Baumwipfelpfad at the Lusen National Park Center (with 44-meter-high tree tower!) are within easy reach.
  • The Bavarian Forest Museum Village and the Forest Museum are also worth a visit.
  • Just around the corner, in St. Englmar, you’ll find a well-developed skiing area.
  • In St. Englmar, you can have a lot of fun skiing in winter, and in summer you can go down the giant slide. The Science Center Xperium is also located here.
  • You can buy elegant glasses in the “glass city” of Zwiesel, where you can find a glass industry and crystal manufactories.
  • Passau in the border triangle with its pretty old town is not far away either.
