Die Fellerei
There’s nothing cliché about the small, fine hotel Die Fellerei in the Harz Mountains. The hosts, Kirsten and Tobias Feller, are modern Harz and homeland lovers. They have an eye for the little beauties along the way, long walks in the forest, the cheerful chirping of birds and nature’s tranquility. In 2016, they took over the former brewery that had been operating as a small guesthouse, and since then, they have been able to share 'their Harz' with many guests. The small boutique hotel is located in Buntenbock, a district of the university and mining town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld. The interior of the Swedish-style wooden building is colorful and tidy. The individually furnished rooms follow the 'Harz mix', as the hosts affectionately call their style – natural materials and Nordic design, first and second-hand furniture, refurbished and natural, playful and unconventional. This mix has a very personal feel and because the hotel is small and informal, you quickly feel welcome. Kirsten and Tobias work with local networks and suppliers and put an emphasis on sustainability – regional food, natural resources, and short transportation routes. The feel-good secret of the Fellerei is simple – treating the world and people well is important to the Fellers.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The red wooden house looks like something out of a Swedish children's book.
- The wonderful combination of old and new furniture, the mix of Nordic-clean style and natural materials, the unconventional color scheme and the creative details; all rooms are individually and creatively furnished
- The late-riser breakfast and dinner with a focus on regional products, creatively combined to make delicious meals. Meals are served for all guests to dine together in the common rooms at cozy tables (if you like), or in the courtyard when the weather is nice.
- The large garden with plenty of sunny spots
- Environmental protection is a matter of conviction: green electricity is used, upcycling is not a foreign concept, regional food comes from well-known producers with short transportation routes
- The hosts focus on close ties with the region and source their food from neighboring farms and producers.
- The friendly hosts have the best tips for hikes in the surrounding area.
- After a long hike, you can enjoy a nightcap in the hotel's own small bar with beer brewed or gin distilled in the Harz. The focus here is also on regionality.
- The opportunity to swim in the nearby mountain lake
GOOD TO KNOW:
- Host Kirsten Feller is a trained yoga teacher and offers regular courses, individual sessions or retreats (very popular so book quickly!)
- There is a 45m² seminar room for up to 12 people.
- Your booking includes morning and evening meals – and you’ll love it! There’s a late riser breakfast, and dinner is a three-course menu with regional delicacies for everyone. Meat is served once a week.
- The Brocken in the Hochharz is about a 50 minutes drive from here.
- Hikes start right outside the door. Forests, meadows, lakes, rivers ¬ everything is nearby.
- In Clausthal-Zellerfeld, it's worth taking a look at the Marktkirche zum Heiligen Geist, the largest wooden church in Germany. And it’s blue!
- There is deliberately no TV in the rooms (but there is WiFi).
