Palais Wunderlich
If the name sounds like something out of a storybook, it’s not surprising. There are indeed many stories to be told about Palais Wunderlich in Lahr in the Black Forest. Built in 1798/99 as the stately residence of the colonial goods merchant Carl Ludwig Wunderlich, the property has housed, over the years, not only merchants and mayors, but also a cigar factory and a wine shop. The current owners, Alexander and Alexandra Hugenberg, actually wanted to resell the Palais immediately after it was renovated in 2013. But they just couldn't part with the building's captivating splendor and decided to rent out high-quality flats in the listed building. They skillfully combined modern design elements such as sleek kitchens and bathrooms with old materials. Exposed bricks and beams and creaking wooden floorboards are just as reminiscent of the long history of the place as the high stucco ceilings and the herringbone parquet flooring. Years before the opening, the hosts set out to find suitable furniture. They have devotedly combined refurbished antiques with design classics and upholstered furniture matching the color scheme of each flat. Everywhere guests discover lovingly selected accessories such as vases, chests and side tables. There is so much space in and around the Palais that you can not only holiday there alone or with family and friends, but also celebrate in large groups. And with every visit and every celebration, new stories are written at Palais Wunderlich.
