Na Travessa Suites
When Mariana and Pedro opened their first B&B in an old stone house in the center of Porto in 2007, today’s tourism boom was still unthinkable. The city on the Douro River was in a deep slumber and many of the buildings had fallen into disrepair. But the couple with their pioneering spirit had excellent taste and a keen sense of the potential of their home town. And they were spot on. The guesthouse, which quickly flourished, has already been sold, and since 2021 the family has dedicated itself to its second major project—The Na Travessa Suites, a small hotel in the heart of the historic old town. All that was left of the mid-19th century house, which used to house a foundry, was the simple façade and a few details such as the beautiful stone arch at the back. Mariana and Pedro had the interior completely redesigned by local architect Luís Sobral and his firm depa Architects. With lots of wood, exposed concrete and natural tones, eight double rooms of different sizes were created on the upper two floors. All have a small balcony and a view over the city. Guests wake up to the beauty of Porto right at their feet. Striking wooden ceiling beams and modern fixtures characterize the rooms. The en suite bathrooms have been harmoniously incorporated into the rooms. The day at Na Travessa Suítes begins with breakfast: It’s served at a long wooden table or in the conservatory with a view of the beautiful inner courtyard, where historic fieldstone walls are a reminder of the long history of the place. Then it’s off to explore the town with Mariana and Pedro’s insider tips in tow. Conveniently, the most important sights of Porto’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are within walking distance of the Na Travessa Suítes—the perfect location for an inspiring city trip.
