Casa Quintas

Will I go surfing on the beach today, roll out my yoga mat, take a stroll through a local market or simply soak up the sun by the pool in the tropical garden? If these are the only questions on my mind, then I really must be on vacation! In this charming boho-style guest house not far from Lisbon, I feel like I’ve left all my every day cares far behind me. Casa Quintas is located just around the corner from the former fishing village and current surfing hotspot Ericeira, surrounded by vineyards, in the quiet village of Barril. Following extensive renovation, the former country house is now home to eight light-flooded rooms, tastefully decorated with earthy colors, wood, rattan and traditional Portuguese details. During a trip, Jord and Aranka, a couple from the Netherlands, discovered the ageing building and put their heart and soul into renovating it during the coronavirus period. And now this benefits everyone who discovers this wonderful spot for themselves. The passion with which the two of them run the hotel becomes clear as soon as you wake up. A different breakfast is served here every day, lovingly homemade and with lots of regional products. From banana pancakes and Bircher muesli to French toast, açaí bowls and yoghurt with fresh fruit. At the rightly named “Sunday Feast”, morning indulgence goes all out—with the divine puff pastry tarts Pasteis de Nata, fresh waffles and bread from the neighboring bakery. And as the passion for all things delicious, pleasant and beautiful is evident in every corner of the Casa, you will find nothing but vacation bliss in this little house.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The friendly, bright and airy rooms
  • The beautiful pool area with terrace, spacious veranda and comfortable sun loungers
  • The homemade jams made from figs and apricots from the owners’ own garden
  • The fact that you can leave your car at home. You can easily walk to the typical Portuguese restaurant, bar or supermarket.
  • The friendly animal housemates, whose company makes you feel even more at home here: Dogs Joop and Tos and cats Muis and Chef
  • Getting up on those boards that mean the world to so many! The Casa works with a private surf instructor who can accommodate all your needs. If you come between May and October, it’s best to book in advance!
  • Everyone will find their favorite beach here. Praia da Calada can be reached in 25 minutes on foot or in two minutes by car. The famous surf spot Ribeira D’ilhas is a 10-minute drive away and Praia Foz do Lizandro, which is perfect for a day at the beach with children, is around 20 minutes away by car.
  • Twice a week, Jord and Aranka organize a cozy barbecue evening by the pool for their guests. At a long table in the backyard, you can indulge in culinary delights, drink a few glasses of wine, meet new people and roll into bed at a late hour, full and happy.
  • Every Wednesday, a yoga class is held in the spacious garden with a certified instructor, which can be booked for 15 euro. With birdsong and a view of the surrounding vineyards, the asanas will make you even happier than you already are.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Breakfast is included in the price and is served in the garden by the pool or indoors on request. If you have any food intolerances or dietary preferences, it’s best to let the hosts know before you arrive so that they can cater for them.
  • In most double rooms, an extra bed for a child can be accommodated for an additional charge. Very young children under the age of two can sleep in a baby bed free of charge. High chairs and toys are also available.
  • Among the eight rooms, there’s also a family room for four people and an apartment for four to five people with two bedrooms, bathroom and living room with kitchenette.
  • The house has a mini store (so far, more of a shelf, but there are plans to expand ...), where you can find special souvenirs, such as oil, jewelry or ceramics from the region. There’s also vegan and plastic-free plant-based sun protection from Palm & Pine, made in Ericeira.
  • Marie-Stella-Maris body care products made from natural ingredients are available for guests in the bathrooms.
  • The honesty bar with a great selection of sodas, beers from the Netherlands and local wines is open 24/7. Olives, potato chips, and Portuguese cheese and ham are available for when you just fancy a snack.
  • Twice a week there is also a yoga session in the morning.
  • There is so much to do, even for those who aren’t passionate surfers: Wine or mountain bike tours, golfing or a ride through the eucalyptus forest on a Lusitano. The towns of Peniche, Nazaré and Sintra are also worth a visit, as is the lively capital Lisbon (about an hour’s drive away).
  • If you’re traveling with friends or family, you can also book several rooms—or the entire house if you’re dreaming of a wedding or a special birthday in Portugal.
  • Casa Quintas is about 45 minutes from Lisbon airport.
  • A rental car is definitely recommended for your stay. Cars can be parked directly in front of the house.
  • The minimum stay is four nights.
