Solo Palacio
In a spectacular location amidst the green hills of Asturias in the northwest of Spain, Solo Palacio is housed in a historic manor house dating back to the 15th century. The hotel with its 11 apartments follows the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, the aesthetic concept that celebrates imperfection by focusing on nature, simplicity and transience. This is precisely what gives the manor house in Las Ubiñas Nature Park its special charm, having been carefully restored with ecological aspects in mind. Each accommodation is furnished with high-quality natural materials and antique furniture in natural tones. The minimalist apartments, some housed in the main house, others in the outbuildings of different vintages, exude rural simplicity and historic charm featuring untreated beamed ceilings, exposed brickwork and carved wooden doors. Simple but sophisticated is no contradiction here, as everything is of the highest quality. The Solo X Monte Bistró restaurant, a collaboration with the Michelin-starred Monte restaurant, serves creative Asturian cuisine with a special focus on local and sustainable ingredients. Guests can dine on the terrace with sweeping views of the countryside or in the dining room with high ceilings, historic tiled floors and an old fireplace that reaches up to the ceiling. This is the place to enjoy a typical three-course dinner, which might consist of a delicious menu like this: Baked morbier cheese with toasted bread and seasonal fruit, followed by pasta with sobrasada sausage and red deep-sea prawns, then a legendary caramelized French toast with chocolate and coffee notes—all accompanied by local craft beers and wines from the Cangas de Onís cellars. But it’s not just the sense of taste that makes it so appealing. Taste, see, feel, smell—a stay at Solo Palacio is a very immersive sensual experience.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- Nature, minimalism and the magic of small things take on a special meaning here.
- All apartments are furnished to a high standard and have been decorated with loving attention to detail.
- Gold-colored cutlery, crystal cocktail glasses or rustic milking stools from days gone by—every piece has been carefully selected.
- The mix of antique and contemporary styles combined with European and Asian objects that come together so harmoniously in the accommodations
- The infinity pool with a view of the wooded valley—a cut above many a luxury spa. There’s also a panoramic sauna in a stone outbuilding and an outdoor whirlpool.
- The hotel’s atmospheric bar with its backlit shelves. Here you can make yourself comfortable at aperitif time or try something delicious from the cocktail menu. How about a Gin & Beet with aromas of elderflower, beet and cranesbill, for example?
- The activities on offer here, mostly focusing on finding peace and time—from guided meditation to tea ceremonies
- How committed the owners are to nature conservation and sustainability. As a non-profit organization, profits are reinvested in local environmental and development initiatives. Any profits left over go directly to environmental and nature conservation projects in the surrounding area.
- The landscape around the estate: The area is a paradise for nature lovers with lush forests and pristine beaches. In the Las Ubiñas-La Mesa nature park, there are numerous hiking trails, old forest stands, archaeological sites and wildlife.
