Meraki Studios

Birdsong and the chirping of crickets are constant companions in this rocky corner of Crete. Otherwise, it is wonderfully quiet. Noisy streets and cities, beach promenades, and souvenir stalls seem incredibly far away. Jan and Vanessa, hosts and builders of Meraki Studios, had been looking for a place where they could raise their twins close to nature and share this experience with vacationers. In 2022, they moved to Crete. In Sigurd Larsen, a Danish architect based in Berlin, they found someone who could realize their vision of a retreat on a special piece of land. The previous owner was known for his love of plants and his special knack for gardening, which is reflected in the property’s incredible botanical diversity. Like the 6,300m² garden, the building is also laid out in tiers. It follows the shape of the stony hillside, in which the apartments seem to nestle. With the flat roofs and a cube-shaped layout, Sigurd Larsen pays homage to the traditional Cretan architectural style. He also chose exterior materials – concrete and stone from the surrounding area – that fit in with the environment. The interior, however, is characterized by wooden frames and fixtures that offset the cool effect of the exposed concrete pillars. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors connect the living spaces with individual terraces, all arranged in such a way that guests' privacy is maintained. The infinity pool in the garden promises pleasant cooling. Whether inside or outside, every detail reflects the dedication of the hosts. That's why the name “Meraki” fits perfectly. The Greek word means “a matter of the heart” – and that's exactly what this place is.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

• Guests can enjoy the sweeping view of the landscape as soon as they wake up.
• The apartments stay nice and cool even in summer, thanks to the pergola-shaded terraces.
• The building blends into its surroundings in every respect, thanks to authentic materials and a garden designed with local plants such as fig and olive trees.
• Greece fan Sigurd Larsen relies on the skills of local craftsmen. Their custom-made furniture makes efficient use of every corner.
• An organic vegetable garden is in the making. Guests are invited to participate – and to harvest.
• Architect Sigurd Larsen chose building materials that will age gracefully, their patina only adding to the charm of the house.
• Natural materials can also be found inside: in the mattresses from COCO-Mat and the numerous wooden fixtures, for example.
• The hosts live in a separate house on the same property and are happy to share their enthusiasm for the island.

GOOD TO KNOW:

• Four studios for two people each and two vacation apartments for four people each make the accommodation ideal for couples as well as for families and small groups.
• A car is recommended; for those without one, there is a bus stop 500 meters away.
• The pretty village of Spili with its famous Venetian lion fountain is only an eight-minute drive away. It has a supermarket, a bakery, a pharmacy, and a farmers' market.
• The accommodation is located in the central mountains of Crete. The beaches of Ligres and Triopetra are about 25 minutes away by car.
• The Psiloritis Nature Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark, offers numerous hiking trails.
• The drive from the Chania or Heraklion airport takes about an hour and a half.
• The minimum stay is three days.
