Holiday apartment, Hotel, Italy, Lake Garda

GIUS La Damaglück

Set among cypresses and olive trees, dense hedges, palm trees, ginkgoes, and oleanders, the softly textured plaster facade of the boutique guesthouse really catches the eye. Shutters, doors, and balcony railings gleam in dove blue. And in the garden, the fringes of striped retro umbrellas flutter in the breeze, lending shade around the curved pool. This stylish retreat is located near Marciaga in northern Italy, just ten minutes from the shores of Lake Garda. But that’s only one of the many reasons to spend a few days of vacation here. There’s also the relaxed, friendly atmosphere where you immediately feel at home—the cozy corners in the garden, where you can settle into rattan seating and rust-red lounge chairs, take time to read, or enjoy long conversations. The historic character of the house is also exceptional with its natural stone, exposed beams, and a well-preserved fireplace. Surrounded by ancient walls, the interiors of the rooms, studios, and apartments really come into their own, enhanced by the restored vintage apothecary cabinet, the Chesterfield sofa paired with dining chairs featuring Viennese wickerwork, and the many unique light fixtures. To make the vacation experience even more perfect, there’s also a portafilter espresso machine and an honesty wine cellar, just waiting to be enjoyed. Guests love to celebrate special moments at the sturdy tree-trunk table under the loggia, in the sunshine or by candlelight, and plenty of that Italian laid-back charm.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The studios, rooms, and apartments are furnished very tastefully with antiques, simple built-in features, and design classics. The bright, minimalist rooms with wood or terracotta floors, historic ceiling beams, and high-quality fabrics simply radiate warmth.
  • The breakfast which Maria, the heart and soul of the house, lovingly arranges on étagères every morning is individually prepared to guests’ preferences. Whether waffles or pancakes, fresh fruit with granola, or savory options—it offers everything to suit all tastes.
  • The view of the Mediterranean garden and (from the higher-level accommodations) all the way to the mountains and vineyards
  • In the historic house, small details tell stories of days gone by, such as the cast-iron pans and pots that hang decoratively from the ceiling in the common area.
  • Relaxing by the pool in the garden and enjoying the sun—surrounded by Mediterranean plants and a laid-back retro vibe
  • The stylish bathrooms feature checkerboard-patterned tiles and fixtures and sinks with vintage flair. The freestanding bathtub in the boutique apartments offers little spa-style moments.
  • On vacation, there’s finally time to read and browse: Newspapers, magazines, and books are available to borrow from the in-house library.
  • Little culinary treats are provided throughout the day: Herbal teas, nuts, and fruit, but especially homemade “bedtime treats”—small, delicate sweets before turning in.
  • The wine cellar in the style of an honesty bar, where you can help yourself to chilled drinks and wines at any time
  • The location of the boutique guesthouse: Quiet and away from the hustle and bustle, yet restaurants are within walking distance. There are numerous hiking trails in the immediate vicinity, and you can be at the lake and right at the heart of the action in less than 10 minutes
