Basgi Basgi
In Corsica, people say “basgi basgi” (pronounced ‘bashi bashi’) to show their affection. It’s an expression of friendship, coupled with the promise of a reunion. For hosts Coline and Matthieu, there couldn’t have been a more fitting name for their boutique hotel in Saint-Florent in the north of the island, because this is exactly the feeling they want to convey to their guests—a welcome as if they were old friends. The sand-colored limestone building with sage-green shutters was the first wine cellar in the Nebbiu region. Since 2025, however, it has been home to 28 guest rooms spread across two buildings—some overlook the sea, others open onto the garden. The understated decor combines Mediterranean style with Art Deco features and graphic elements reminiscent of 1980s Memphis design: Plenty of light, warm colors, natural materials, and harmonious shapes. Outside, you’ll find a pool next to some tall pine trees, inviting you to adjust your lounge chair, open a book, and slip into the water every now and then. The hotel also includes the restaurant La Table, serving upscale bistro cuisine incorporating Corsican and Mediterranean flavors. Dishes might sound something like this: Veal cromesquis with parsnips and Jerusalem artichokes, blue crab on a salad of cucumber and roasted peanuts, and to finish, a combination of hazelnut cookies and nectarine compote—accompanied by a choice of a hundred Corsican wines. All of this makes it very easy to stay put for now—and to start exploring this magnificent island tomorrow.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The hotel is just a short walk from Cap Corse, several beaches, and the village of Saint-Florent with its harbor, and the boutiques and specialty shops that often stay open late into the night in the summer.
- How understated luxury and authentic charm come together in this designer accommodation
- Earthy color tones paired with distinctive, bold hues, natural materials like raffia, rattan, and wood, contemporary art, fresh flowers, and a touch of vintage flair combine to create a cozy atmosphere.
- Marie Tomasini of MT Architecture and interior designer Léa Ueshima have successfully created a concept that preserves the historic character of the building while transforming it into a space with the atmosphere of a Mediterranean vacation home.
- The casual design of the bar: The walls and ceiling are painted in petrol blue, creating a lively contrast to the counter clad in yellow subway tiles. Sitting on a solid wooden bar stool beneath the decorative retro fan, you can raise a toast to your vacation with an Amaretto Coffee and a Salvia Martini.
- Everything served at La Table is so lovingly presented that you’ll feel almost reluctant to eat these works of art decorated with fresh flowers. The restaurant bears the Gusti di Corsica label, only awarded to establishments that use high-quality Corsican products.
- The barbecue evenings held every Sunday, featuring Ikejimé tuna, octopus, and other freshly caught delicacies. It’s a wonderful opportunity to mingle with other guests and wind down the day with wine and good conversation.
- Lazing the day away on one of the cushioned loungers by the pool: The wooden terrace, the warm lighting, and the Mediterranean pines make this spot a relaxing retreat.
- How personally and attentively the hosts, Coline and Matthieu, look after their guests’ well-being: They can recommend their favorite restaurants, organize wine tastings in Patrimonio, or offer tips for boat trips to Cap Corse, the Italian island of Capraia, or a day cruise in the Gulf of Saint-Florent aboard a vintage boat.
