Knütthuus

A knotted mesh of yellow ropes is the eye-catcher in this minimalist house in Zernien in the Wendland region. The simple explanation would be that it serves as fall protection from the open gallery. But it is much more than that. Yellow is the chosen color for selected highlights throughout the house, and, more significantly, the mesh is a symbol. The owners, fashion designer Irina Rohpeter and civil engineer Nils Kistner want to use their vacation home specifically to build a network for young creatives. Guests who – like themselves – love beautiful things and the people who make them. Especially unusual, stylish furnishings and accessories created with great attention to detail. They’ve achieved their goal. And, last but not least, the yellow meshwork is also the namesake for the house: knütten is Low German for knotting, knitting, tying, braiding, or just fiddling about. You can, and are encouraged to, do all that in the Knütthuus.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The open view into the forest
  • The yellow, which can be found everywhere (the hosts even found clothes hangers in yellow: from Peppermint Products).
  • The open living concept with a central room for living, cooking, and dining – comfy-cozy in the cooler seasons with a stove.
  • The simple and reduced architecture and furnishings – everything is relaxed and unagitated, and blends well with the surroundings.
  • The house seems to float – the timber frame construction stands on a foundation of concrete strips, which creates the magical impression.
  • The south terrace, which extends directly from the living room into the back garden.
  • The open gallery, which serves as a retreat if the living room below is too lively – here you can read, play games, or just chill out.
  • The furnishings, some of which were built by the hosts or sourced from smaller and local designers.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Aa part of the furnishings in the house is available for sale, if you’d like to extend the vacation feeling.
  • Children are welcome (up to age 2 free of charge), baby bed and high chair are available on request, also free of charge.
  • The Wendland is easy to reach from Hamburg, so it is not unusual to meet one or the other nature-loving and somewhat alternative-creative Hanseat there.
  • The 85m² house is located in the middle of 1300m² of undeveloped land.
  • For the kids, there’s a sandbox and a tree house.
  • You can go for walks in the forest or the Nemitzer Heide, or in the nearby picturesque Rundlings, a type of circular village typical of the Early Medieval period and now found only in Northern Germany.
  • One double bed is downstairs in the bedroom, the second bed is upstairs on the open gallery.
  • das Haus kann auch für Seminare und Workshops gebucht werden (Angebot nach Absprache)
  • Minimum stay is 3 nights in the low season, 7 nights during school holidays.
