Sticklerhof

Anyone who has the pleasure of living in paradise should be able to share. Fortunately, the Kiem family of the Sticklerhof in Algund is very generous. In the 1950s, grandmother Aloisia Theiner Kiem (as one of the first in the village) received vacation guests and ran a bed and breakfast on the farm for wine, fruit and agriculture until the 1980s. After several years without guests, Conni and Ulrich Kiem, along with their children Felix and Jonathan and the old farmer’s grandmother Burgl, have been welcoming guests again who are seeking rest, relaxation and above all beauty since 2019. They now reside in the time-honored wooden barn, which has undergone an extraordinary conversion for the occasion. Where once cattle, pigs and chickens had their home, there is now an architectural highlight that combines the historic and the contemporary in perfect harmony—both inside and out. Everything here is deserving of the attribute “beautiful” from the old, historic wooden beams, the modern and simple (at the same time high-quality) furniture, the designer lamps, through to the color concept. Since the landscape also fits very well into the beauty concept for obvious reasons, it’s simply brought into the house by virtue of the floor-to-ceiling glazing. And because a real paradise most definitely includes good food that’s a delight to savor, you can go ahead and pick your own fruit directly from the tree, get fresh eggs from the chicken coop, dig some vegetables out of the ground and drink the house’s own wine in the evening. Afterwards, you can swim a few laps in the small but no less idyllic lake—let’s say swimming pond—right outside the door with a fantastic view of the mountains. Thank you, family Kiem, for sharing this beautiful spot!

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The very successful conversion —the time-honored barn (built in the 1940s by hand and with pine wood from their own forests) treated with a lot of respect to preserve the original character of the house.
  • The symbiosis of old building fabric and modern design— old wood and natural materials combined with black steel and glass and a modern, minimalist interior design.
  • Both apartments have a large terrace, which becomes a second living room when the weather is nice.
  • The natural swimming pond (without chemical additives) including a wooden jetty and a sitting area
  • The idyllic location in the midst of orchards and vineyards—and yet only a walk away from the lively town of Merano
  • The farm is certified organic; much emphasis is placed on sustainability.
  • The sixth generation is already growing up here—a family business through and through.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Algund is only two kilometers from Merano
  • The apartments are 60 square meters each.
  • In the Solder apartment you can enjoy the morning sun and the view of Merano and the Ifinger; in the Brugg apartment you can admire the sunset from the terrace with direct access to the swimming pond.
  • The underfloor heating provides comfortable warmth and the controlled ventilation system ensures fresh air even when the windows are closed.
  • You can also book both apartments together.
  • If you wish, you can have bread rolls delivered from the village bakery in the morning.
  • Ideal starting point for tours in the impressive mountain landscape of the Texelgruppe. For those who don’t want to climb so high, easier hikes along the charming Waal paths are also recommended.
  • Those who prefer to explore the mountains by mountain bike will find a multitude of climbs of various levels of difficulty in the surrounding area, or they can cycle leisurely along the many cycle paths in the direction of Vinschgau or Bolzano.
  • Climbers can also really let off steam here. All types of climbing at almost every level of difficulty can be found in the immediate vicinity—from via ferrata to sport climbing gardens and bouldering areas.
  • Every guest is gifted an AlgundCard as a gift, allowing you to travel for free on public transport (including some cable cars) throughout Southern Tyrol and receive free admission to 90 provincial museums.
