Baixa House
In wonderful Lisbon, the picturesque, hilly city at the western edge of Europe, you can of course find plenty of places to stay, as in any capital city—however, a particularly beautiful and charming place is Baixa House in the central old town district of the same name. The thirteen apartments of varying sizes at Baixa House are found in a magnificent 18th century building. Host and landscape architect Jésus Moraime has named the apartments after parks in Lisbon, as is referenced by the numerous botanical photos throughout the accommodation. Many of the pictures were taken by Jésus himself. In addition to nature, the landlord loves Portuguese handicrafts and good design, past and present. Vintage furniture and lamps, traditional tiles, historic wooden floorboards—the style of the apartments is eclectic, with many items sourced from antique stores, flea markets and Portuguese designers and artists. And then there’s the light! All of the apartments are bright and flooded with light. As a special service, you can order a fresh breakfast every day, which is brought to your door. Services such as daily cleaning are also included. Baixa House is the ideal place from which to discover Lisbon by day and by night—and to feel right at home.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- A whole building devoted to vacation apartments: Whether alone, in a couple or as a large family of seven, there’s the right, beautiful accommodation for everyone.
- The old building with original details such as aged wooden floors, high windows with shutters, an impressive staircase and the typical blue and white tiles
- The comfortable double beds with white sheets are often contrasted with different, colorful, old metal desk lamps.
- Some of the apartments have a balcony with views onto the many beautiful buildings in the area.
- The attentive service: Breakfast provisions are replenished every day and include yogurt, fruit, homemade jams, juices, milk, homemade cakes, ham, and cheese.
- Each apartment has a basic supply of coffee, tea, cocoa, muesli, vinegar, oil and spices.
- Someone is always available to answer questions.
- Lisbon’s legendary streetcar runs right past the building!
- The picturesque building is the ideal starting point for exploring Lisbon.
- There are plenty of great restaurants close by, such as Lisbon Tu e Eu, where every guest can immortalize themselves on the walls with a signature, Restaurante o Frade (Michelin starred), Sumaya (a modern Lebanese restaurant) or Ponte Final, a popular Portuguese restaurant.
- If you do want to go for breakfast, head to Heimcafé or try to get a seat at Seventh.
- In the evening, the Rooftop Bar Park (located on a garage roof) is a great spot.
- And of course you have to listen to some traditional fado—or sing it yourself!
GOOD TO KNOW:
- Children are welcome and baby beds are provided.
- All of the apartments have fully equipped kitchens.
- The apartments are cleaned daily, for long-term guests (also an option here), bed linen and towels are cleaned weekly.
- “We love a non-TV world,” says the landlord. If you still don’t want to do without a TV, you can let them know in advance and they will provide one.
- There is an elevator.
- Baixa House is only five minutes away from the Praça do Comércio, Praça da Figueira and Rossio squares.
- You have to try out the legendary streetcar and take line 28 which happens to pass right in front of the building.
- Lisbon has so much to offer: Tourist sights, parks, countless hip cafés and restaurants, trips to the Atlantic beaches of Sintra and Cascais and much more.
- Why not see another side of the city—take an Uber to Caparica (Irmão), where there is a top-notch beach restaurant and great surfing opportunities.
