Casa Agostos
Casa Agostos is located in the hilly hinterland of the Algarve. Once a small, dilapidated house, it’s now an interesting and inviting place for lovers of design and architecture. Kristoff Van der Vekenshat recognized the special charm of this place and decided to develop a modern vacation home together with the award-winning Portuguese architect Pedro Domingos. The original building, which now houses three bedrooms, has been extended with an entrance area and a wing addition, which now includes a living room and the kitchen. Everything is furnished in a minimalist, elegant style that impresses with its clean lines. Large windows connect the rooms with the immediate surroundings, providing a view of the beautiful, natural landscape. At the same time, they allow plenty of sunlight into the house creating wonderful combinations of light and shade in the rooms. The contrast between the barren landscape with its gnarled almond and olive trees and the clear geometric shapes of the house lends this location its unique visual appeal. Rural tranquility and urban lifestyle at its best! And with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, what more could you want?
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The sophisticated architecture, simple yet very expressive, beautiful to look at and perfect to live in
- The peaceful atmosphere, tranquility and serenity that the house radiates
- The view of the seemingly endless natural surroundings, whether from the large windows, the roof terrace or the pool
- The various seating areas, patios, courtyards, roof terraces and the many other options for finding a spot in the sun (or in the shade)
- The understated, simple and very modern interior
- The characterful pool, enclosed in a 15-meter-long concrete block, offers a unique setting.
- Barbara St. Nexe and only 20 minutes from wonderful beaches.
- The house offers plenty of space for all occasions and requirements, both indoors and outdoors.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- The house is suitable for six people and has three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
- Families are welcome (watch out for the pool as there are no fences or railings—smaller children need a little more supervision.)
- There’s no heating, but there is a fireplace so you can also spend the colder months here in the sunny Algarve.
- Due to the secluded rural location, it’s advisable to rent a car.
- In addition to the beaches on the coast, excursions to many towns in the surrounding area are also worthwhile: For example, to the small fishing village of Olhão with its market hall, the towns of Evora, Flor do Crato, Sagres, Troia, Praia da Marinha, Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago or to the Spanish city of Seville, which is only half an hour away by car.
- A visit to the islands of Ilha da Colatra and Ilha da Armona is also a good change of pace; they are both reachable by ferry from Olhão.
- Nature on the doorstep: Ria Formosa, a nature reserve by the sea, which consists mainly of a lagoon, and Fonte Benemola, a spring area in the hinterland—wonderful for hiking or picnics
- The local restaurants serve good quality grilled fish and seafood at modest prices.
- Faro is the nearest airport and its historic old town is worth a visit (about 20 minutes away).
- Casa Agostos can be rented together with the nearby Casa Luum (for six people).
