Casa Winther
You don't just happen to pass by here. The road narrows, the view widens, and eventually Casa Winther appears before you, a country house standing alone on a hill in Umbria. It is quiet here. Really quiet, aside from the soft chirping of crickets. Umbria likes to call itself the green heart of Italy – up here, you can understand why: olive groves and vineyards stretch across hills and fields, and on clear days, the Apennine Mountains stretch across the eastern horizon. Casa Winther can accommodate up to 16 people on its spacious grounds, making it ideal for vacations with the extended family or a large group of friends. Architecturally, the house combines modern minimalism with classic Umbrian country house character. Terracotta floors, rough natural stone walls, rustic wooden doors, and beamed ceilings meet clean lines, a calm color palette, and carefully selected design classics. The open-plan living area extends over three levels and, despite its spaciousness, creates a very relaxed, cozy atmosphere. Sofas and armchairs by Vitra or Eames and lamps by Artemide stand alongside antique cabinets and rustic chests. The kitchen is large, excellently equipped, and quickly becomes the center of activity, where you can prepare the delicacies of the region. The dining room opens onto two terraces: one facing east, one facing west. Long tables invite you to enjoy your meals outside. For those who want to sample the fantastic cuisine of the region but prefer to let someone else do the cooking, there are many worthwhile day trips in the surrounding area. Castel Ritaldi, four kilometers away, has a restaurant, a bar, and shopping facilities to get you started. The larger town of Spoleto, with even more culinary delights and culture, and Montefalco with its wineries are also within easy reach. Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto, and even Rome are suitable for day trips. There is so much to discover here. If only it were a little easier to leave the house.
What we like:
- The secluded location in an extraordinary landscape: no traffic noise, no neighbors, nothing but peace and quiet.
- The beautiful view that accompanies you throughout the day – in the garden, by the pool, or in the house. Look, pause, and let your gaze wander.
- The Danish host family has designed the living spaces in a modern country house style: terracotta floors, rustic wooden doors, wooden beam ceilings, and natural stone walls.
- The open, light-filled living area with fantastic views.
- The cozy sitting area on the upper level, with a wood-burning stove built into the wall.
- The calm color scheme of natural tones that predominates in all rooms.
- The large pool (14 × 7 meters) with an additional shallow children's area. It is fenced in and heated using solar energy, so that the water is a few degrees warmer than usual in spring and fall.
- Two open fireplaces and a wood-burning stove ensure coziness even in colder seasons.
- The spacious garden: sun loungers, various seating areas, and shady corners are scattered around the property, so everyone can find their favorite spot.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- There is plenty of space on the 400 m² property: the main house can accommodate up to 12 guests, with 3 double rooms, 2 twin rooms, and 4 bathrooms, and a separate guest house with its own kitchen can accommodate 4 more people.
- Children are expressly welcome. Extremely reassuring for families with small children - the pool is fenced in.
- The east terrace offers plenty of sun, while the west terrace has a pergola and a barbecue.
- A ping-pong table invites you to enjoy a few rounds of fun.
- There is a work/TV room – depending on your priorities. It has a computer with an internet connection, a DVD player, and a flat-screen TV.
- Umbria is famous for its cuisine; cooking classes can be arranged or a chef booked on request.
- Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto, and Rome are viable day trips. Spoleto is 9 miles away and is well worth a visit, with its medieval alleys and city walls, Baroque churches, and Renaissance frescoes.
- Shopping facilities, a bar, and a restaurant can be found in the village of Castel Ritaldi, 4 km away.
- The minimum stay is one week; in the off-season, the house can also be rented for a long weekend.
