Das Sternhagener Haus
Sternhagen—a small, enchanting village in the Uckermark, consisting of a medieval church, old farms and a lot of enchanting nature around it. In the middle of the village lies the 200-year-old Sternhagen House. From the outside, it’s a typical Brandenburg farmhouse: Simple, almost austere, and yet inviting with its red bricks, the beaver-tail shingles on the roof and the original windows and doors. When you enter it, you have to let your eyes adjust for a moment to the unexpected brightness and space. The interior has been modernized, walls have been removed, rooms have been opened up to the roof, and old beams have been exposed. White and light gray set the tone and make everything shine and gleam, while black radiators and lamps provide an elegant contrast. The 40 square meters of open space has a wonderfully welcoming and relaxed feel: you can appreciate the beautiful Scandinavian-style furnishings or look out through the window into the garden. Oh yes, the garden: Wild, enchanted and huge, with fragrant elderberry and lilac bushes, gnarled old fruit trees and green meadows. It’s an absolute treat to walk here with bare feet through the summer dew, lie on the meadow with a book, look at the passing clouds, and listen to the croaking of the frogs. The other seasons also have their charm in this place too: Colorful autumn leaves, cool morning mists, a snow-covered landscape or cozy hours by the fireplace. Happiness can be found here all year round.
What we like:
- The modern design—bright and open, offering clarity and tranquility
- The designer Bettina Lempelius and the architect Philipp Kiehn have taken care to preserve the layout of the house and many historical details have been preserved or refurbished.
- Little ones (and also grown-ups) can find various hidden and cozy retreats on the open gallery.
- You quickly feel at home in the large open communal living space—cooking, playing, reading, sitting in front of the fireplace—wonderful!
- The beautiful bathroom in white and black, with free-standing bathtub and view into the garden
- The traditional Buller wood-burning stove
- The 5,000-square-meter garden with wild greenery, fruit trees, bushes and hedges
- The picture book idyll of the Uckermark—fruit trees, meadows, lakes, forests, apple tree-lined streets, deer, hares, swallows, wild geese—a dream for nature lovers
