Der Adler Schoppernau
Wooden shingles, burgundy shutters, petunias in the flower boxes, a panoramic view of the Alps and perhaps even the sound of cowbells –¬ the outside of this hotel in the Bregenzerwald is as idyllic asits inside. The 150-year-old farmer's parlor, where once carters debated the best routes and cheesemakers negotiated prices, , today still welcomes guests, who may find themselves amiably disagreeing on which is the greater pleasure: indulging in the traditional tavern cuisine made from local produce or marveling at the historic coffered wooden ceiling and the gleaming herringbone parquet flooring. Wood remains the theme in the 10 suites and 11 rooms, with their modern ash floors and custom-made built-in furniture oiled elm wood. Natural tones, lime plaster on the walls, and beautiful bathrooms with natural stone floors and handmade wall tiles buttress the soothing atmosphere. December 2022 brought a fresh wind, with the addition of a new apartment house and café about 100 meteres from the main building. The five light-flooded apartments with uplifting names such as Free Spirit or Forever Young were built by craftsmen from the region using high-quality materials. If you’re thinking you’d like to share all of this with your friends and family, consider a big celebration at Villa Maund. Part of the Adler ensemble, the hunting lodge, built in 1890 by the English banker and alpinist Sir John Oakley Maund, stands in the middle of a forest clearing with a breathtaking view of the mountains. Big party or no, this special location is bound to draw you back again and again.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- That you can breathe in the history here while still enjoying all the benefits of modern life ¬ the Bregenzerwald locals call it the best combination of self-confident tradition and bold modernity.
- The architects Albert Moosbrugger and Christian Feldkircher from the architecture firm firm in Lustenau were commissioned to build the new wellness area and modernize the house. As they both come from the area, they have a good knack for modern solutions that still fit in with the property.
- The façade completely covered in wooden shingles and the red shutters on the main building ¬ a typical Bregenzerwald house
- The old farmhouse parlor, which is well over 150 years old
- The use of wood, both inside and out, is typical of the craftsmanship and architecture of the Bregenzerwald.
- The beautiful, purist rooms with harmonious design, natural materials and cozy sofas or seating niches
- Whatever you prefer: hotel room or suite in the main building or a vacation apartment in the new apartment building opposite. There is something for every need and preference.
- The rooms directly under the roof of the main house have been completely refurbished ¬ the high roof trusses make them open and very spacious.
- The hotel's wellness area, which was completely renovated in 2021. You can relax in the Finnish sauna, the bio sauna or the infrared cabin, steam off on the loungers with cozy round arches made of silver fir in the relaxation room, or enjoy the view of the mountains in the outdoor whirlpool.
- The seasonal regional cuisine. The morning starts with a colorful breakfast buffet with fresh waffles, pancakes and egg dishes. There is a small, daily menu in the hotel's farmhouse parlor.
- Café s'Frie is located on the ground floor of the apartment building. There you can have breakfast, a bite to eat for lunch, and a craft beer or aperitivo until the early evening. Sourdough bread, spreads, cakes and desserts ¬ much of the food is homemade and simply delicious!
- The family atmosphere that resonates everywhere. Willi and Hermi Muxel have been running the Adler for more than 35 years and are still fully involved in the business. Their daughter Sandra and her partner Simon are now also working here, and many of the staff have been with them for so long that they are now part of the team.
- In the summer months, the hotel's guest garden is a real favorite. In the shade of old chestnut trees, you can round off a successful mountain tour with a tasty snack.
- The legendary hotel bar, which serves classics from Austrian wineries as well as selected whiskies, gin specialties, and secret elixirs from grandma's schnapps cellar.
- That the younger guests are also thought of. The hotel has a games room with foozball, a small climbing wall, and a ball pit.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- Children up to 2 years stay for free in their parents' room, kids between 3 and 14 years get a reduced rate ¬ and there is also a family suite.
- It's well worth looking out for special offers such as Friends Days, Family Hit or (of course there has to be one here!) the regular guest discount.
- Use of the spa and the juice and tea bar in the wellness area are included for hotel guests. To ensure that everyone can relax, the wellness area is reserved for people over the age of 14 from 3 pm onwards.
- The fully equipped accommodations in the apartment building have one, two, or three bedrooms and are between 43 and 90 square meters.
- For those with bigger plans: Villa Maund can be booked for events for up to 85 people and offers the right ambience for seminars and conferences in 3 English salons. Occasionally the venur hosts evening events, such as a hunting dinner with live music or the Great Gatsby Night.
- The Adler is one of the few hotels in the region to be certified according to the strict criteria of the Austrian Ecolabel. Instead of fossil fuels, the hotel is heated with geothermal energy and 100 percent of its electricity comes from renewable sources.
- Which pillow guarantees the most restful sleep is almost a question of faith. Guests can choose their dream pillow from the pillow menu. What a good idea!
- Guests staying 3 nights or more receive the Bregenzerwald Guest Card in the summer, allowing them to use the cable cars, buses and outdoor pools free of charge.
- There is a bike and e-bike rental service right in the hotel. Mountain bikes are available for an extra charge.
- Winter sports enthusiasts can look forward to lots of good tips from their hosts. The region has 3-valley ski areas, natural toboggan runs and countless winter and snowshoe hiking trails. The hotel itself has a ski room with a ski boot warmer and a free ski bus to the slopes.
- Those arriving by train can travel to Dornbirn or Bregenz station, from where there are regular bus connections to Schoppernau. Such an environmentally friendly journey is rewarded with a voucher from the s'Frie day café.
