Der Schmiedhof
Sometimes happiness strikes least when you expect it. For example, you wake up one morning, open your eyes only to find yourself awestruck by the legendary vista of the Wendelstein mountain—all from the comfort of your bed. This is exactly what can happen in Apartment Vroni. Vroni is just one of a total of eleven beautiful vacation apartments at the Schmiedhof in Geitau. The small village is located around 60 kilometers from Munich in Bayrischzell, in the middle of a stunningly beautiful valley. Here, in this picture-perfect idyll, the really important things in life await you: Peace, nature, relaxation and the sincere warmth of hosts Brigitte and Michael Schmied. It was as if the historic farmstead had been waiting for them, when the couple discovered the former nail smithy for sale there in 2018—a smithy for the ‘Schmieds’ (smiths in English), that was surely no coincidence! The Schmieds didn’t miss a beat and set about realizing their long-cherished dream: In just two years, they woke the old farm from its slumber and launched a modern vacation resort with a restored, listed residential section and completely redesigned outdoor facilities. Each apartment impresses with a magnificent view of the surrounding mountain landscape. Natural materials such as wood, linen, furs and stone set the tone, creating just the right flair to switch off in style. You can fully recharge your batteries in the casual lounge or in the beautiful communal garden with sunbathing lawn. Or take a moment to relax in hanging chairs, doze amongst the greenery or philosophize by the fire ring. In this setting, time has no role to play. Before you know it, you’ll be overwhelmed by a feeling of pure contentment, knowing that all is right with the world in this place.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The conversion of the farmhouse was an impressive joint effort: Family, friends and local tradesmen helped, among other things, to demolish the former commercial wing, build a complete basement with underground parking and rebuild it using the old wood from the demolished section.
- The apartments range from 52 to 113 square meters in size and have all been furnished with great attention to detail.
- Lots of white, light tone-on-tone colors and wood radiate peace and comfort, enticing you to relax and unwind.
- Fresh air at all times: Each apartment has either access to the garden (on the first floor) or a balcony (on the second floor).
- The old farmhouse furniture, fully equipped country kitchens, natural stone floors or fine oak parquet combine harmoniously with contemporary, elegant design to create a modern interpretation of Bavarian charm.
- The two largest apartments offer exceptionally luxurious furnishings: Designer kitchens, a choice of a wood-burning stove and a sunset loggia or lots of wood and a casual hammock—the latter apartment nestled in an extraordinary ambience in the listed extension.
- There’s a self-service herb bed in the communal garden.
- The spacious garden with sunbathing lawn and the casual Schmiedhof lounge with cozy hanging chairs, a large wooden table and fireplace
- Those who love the mountains will find their own personal paradise in Geitau: The village is framed by the Wendelstein, the highest peak in the Mangfallgebirge, on the one side and the Aiplspitz on the other.
- The friendly hosts live on site and are happy to provide tips about the region.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- The nearest shopping facilities are only about five kilometers from the farm; a bread roll service is also available.
- Hikes, bike tours, cross-country skiing—no matter what time of year you visit the Schmiedhof, Geitau is the ideal starting point for all activities. For more distant destinations, you can use the hiking and ski bus that leaves from right outside the farm.
- Your equipment is stored safely in the lockable bike and ski cellar.
- The outdoor kitchen and fire ring can also be used by prior arrangement.
- For those who want that little bit more: A wellness area and breakfast are available in the hotel next door.
- The hotel is also suitable for retreats.
- The Wendelstein is one of the most prominent peaks in Upper Bavaria. Those who love a challenge and dare to climb the around 1,000 meters in altitude will be richly rewarded, but don’t worry, you can also get to the top quite comfortably by cable car.
- For those who prefer leisurely exercise, we recommend the relaxed valley hike around the glider airfield.
- In Geitau, you can stop off at traditional inns such as the Postgasthof Rote Wand—perfect after hiking or cycling tours.
- Great excursion destinations nearby include the lakes Schliersee (around 12 minutes by car) and Tegernsee (around 26 minutes by car) or the picturesque old town of Miesbach (around 20 minutes by car).
