Gut Nehmten

It’s one of those places that reminds us how good it is to spend time surrounded by nature. How delicious apples taste when we pick them fresh from the tree. The scent of wildflowers, the feeling of a morning dip in the lake or a long fall walk. The journey alone offers us glimpses of beauty. All around are dense forests, fields and meadows and grazing horses. Ancient oak trees line the avenue that leads to the ensemble of white houses. Arrive and breathe in the country air! Gut Nehmten, family-owned since 1768, is located in the conservation area directly on the shores of Lake Plön in Schleswig-Holstein. Four boutique apartments have been built here since 2022, all full of rural comfort, historic details, cozy corners with armchairs and sofas and high-quality fixtures and fittings. The two-story Backhaus with its three bedrooms and the small Seehaus for two people are the place to be for anyone who likes to be as close to the water as possible while enjoying the view over the deep blue lake from their own terrace. There are also two vacation apartments in the Alte Meierei: One with particularly beautiful original elements such as a stone floor, cast-iron pillars and industrial-style lattice windows, the other featuring oiled floorboards and a loft character. They’re all furnished differently, but probably the best thing they all have in common—apart from the stylish interior—is a fireplace in each accommodation where you can listen to the fire crackling. When you’re lost in your own thoughts in the tree swing on the shore, enjoying food straight from the barbecue under old trees on a summer evening or encountering an otter while paddling, it soon becomes clear that great happiness can be found here, above all, in the simple things. 

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

• Every accommodation exudes such a feel-good atmosphere that it makes it really difficult to choose one. They feature a really successful mix of modern kitchens, some in Shaker style, lots of wicker and rattan, shag-pile carpets and antiques such as paintings, store furniture from days gone by or an old globe.
• The design in harmonious natural tones evokes the colors of the local landscape and is combined with home textiles in bolder shades.
• The wonderfully relaxing view of Lake Plön that all the accommodations offer
• The animal residents who make the place even more endearing—you’ll see cats prowling around, chickens clucking in the coop around the corner and you’ll regularly be able to spot a white-tailed eagle nesting nearby.
• The beach area by the lake, which belongs to the estate—enjoy the meadow, sand, a small pavilion and cushioned sun loungers. From here, you can swim to the swimming pontoon in the lake and hone your diving technique—or warm yourself in the sun.
• How comfortable even the little ones feel here. This is also because there’s a pony riding school in the area, lots of great hiding places and the lake is so shallow that you can splash around endlessly in the water—known to be the number one favorite activity for this target group.
• The barbecue area right by the water—enjoying a picnic there in the evening sun awakens that vacation feeling. Speaking of which, you can buy fishing permits nearby and catch your own fish.
• It’s nice and green on all levels: The electricity is produced ecologically from renewable raw materials and fed into the general grid. A heating network uses the generated waste heat to heat all the buildings on the estate. 

GOOD TO KNOW:

• Backhaus, Seehaus, Meierei 1 and Meierei 2 (with private garden!) are different sizes and can accommodate up to five people (the Backhaus can even accommodate six guests).
• Traveling in a larger group? On request, the two vacation apartments Meierei 1 and Meierei 2 can be joined by a connecting corridor.
• All apartments and houses have a fully equipped fitted kitchen.
• Get out into the great outdoors! Walking trails and bike tours around the lake (bikes can be rented in the neighboring village!) start right outside the door. Or you can grab one of the canoes that are available. If you’re lucky, you’ll come across deer or roe deer on hikes in the hotel’s own forest.
• You can do some wonderful regional shopping here. Between the cheese farm, farm stores, the Plön weekly market or the smokehouse and fishery around the corner, you’ll find lots of delicious ingredients for breakfast or a barbecue on the shore. The hosts have also put together some good restaurant recommendations on the website.
• Gut Nehmten is an active agricultural and forestry business that has been in the hands of one family for over 250 years. The hosts also live there with their three children and a dachshund.
• The lake house can be used as a meeting, workshop, conference or yoga room. A conference table and seating for 10 people are available.
• The manor house is conveniently located for exploring the region. An excursion to the car-free “Prinzeninsel” headland in Lake Plön is really nice. The nearest golf course, Waldshagen, is 20 minutes away. You can reach the Ostseetherme Scharbeutz spa in 45 minutes by car. Lübeck, Eutin or Hamburg aren’t far away either.
