Heuberg

On the hillside above Schwarzenberg, the view opens up over meadows, the valley, and the mountain backdrop of the Bregenz Forest. It’s in this landscape that Ulla and Lukas Feurstein built Heuberg 1014 in 2022—a wooden house that blends harmoniously into its surroundings, yet has its own unique style. Built by local craftsmen, the house stands on the hillside with its calm, unadorned, wooden façade. The familiar shape of the gable has been retained, while slats, loggias, and large window fronts lend the architecture a contemporary lightness. The interior also has a clear design language: Wood and exposed concrete, unobtrusively combined and complemented by custom-fit fixtures and bespoke furniture, create an atmosphere that’s both minimalist and warm. All eight vacation apartments offer views of the green slopes, the Bregenz Forest, and the peaks that frame the horizon. The house is located slightly above the village, just a few minutes from Bödele. When you step outside, you’ll find yourself immediately immersed in nature: Hiking trails start right outside the front door, and summer mountain railways take hikers up to the peaks. The hilly landscape is also ideal for exploring by mountain bike., while wild rivers offer opportunities for rafting and fishing. Those who prefer nature to the hustle and bustle of the slopes in winter can set off on snowshoes and skis—followed by a relaxing, private sauna on their return. The Feursteins designed Heuberg 1014 to make it a place they’d love to move into themselves right away. Every detail has been carefully considered in terms of sustainability, functionality, and sociability. The hosts provide a platform for regional producers and workshops in their own shop—an all-round appealing concept that breaks new ground without losing sight of its own origins.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The idyllic location on the hillside above the quaint village of Schwarzenberg
  • Natural materials sourced locally: The wood for the fixtures and facade comes from the surrounding area.
  • The materials and color scheme are deliberately understated, creating a calm atmosphere.
  • The chic, black kitchens—real wow factors!
  • The winning balance of tradition and modernity—without any kitsch
  • Visitors can look forward to genuine hospitality. Ulla and Lukas’s home is right next door and the family has lots of tips to share.
  • All apartments have spacious terraces and balconies.
  • The personal touch: Each of the apartments is named after one of the hosts’ four children.
  • The larger apartments have their own sauna attached to the bathroom—relaxation pure, especially in winter.
  • The loving details: Hand-sewn bags made from old poster materials are available for shopping to reduce plastic waste.
  • Sustainability is a top priority for the Feursteins. Electricity is supplied by their own photovoltaic system on the roof.
  • The hosts support local initiatives—the tableware comes from a workshop for people with mental disabilities, and anyone who would like to take it home with them can purchase it in the shop. The compostable coffee capsules come from a roastery in Schwarzenberg.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Families are very welcome: Stokke beds and high chairs can be booked for the little ones.
  • There’s also room for larger (multi-generational) families or friends: The Leni apartment extends over the entire attic, providing ample space for eight to ten guests to vacation together.
  • The in-house shop sells cheese, pasta, sauces, and bread for baking—all from the region.
  • The beautiful kitchens are fantastically equipped and feature an induction stove, freezer compartment, coffee machine, and stylish soda maker. Incidentally, the tap water is of excellent quality.
  • Thanks to an elevator, access is barrier-free.
  • With racks for skis and bicycles and space for sleds, Heuberg 1014 is geared towards active tourists.
  • Underground parking spaces with electric charging stations can be booked for an additional fee.
  • Between May and October, the Bregenzerwald Sommerkarte (summer travel card) offers guests staying three nights or more free access to mountain railways, public buses, and outdoor swimming pools.
  • You can reach the hotel by train and bus from Bregenz or Dornbirn train stations.
