Horami Villa
Bao-Tram Thai and Hanh Nguyen-Schwanke are passionate about the Japanese-Scandinavian design philosophy. This can be felt in every square meter of their Horami Villa in Malchow, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. While the Berlin publishers’ bilingual children’s books are often very colorful, their vacation homes are characterized by muted hues and lots of wood. Architecturally, the listed villa sets the tone. Its exposed half-timbering builds an aesthetic bridge between historic charm and modern design. Herringbone parquet and wooden floorboards create a stately atmosphere. Arched hallways structure the apartments, where cream-colored rice paper lamps meet Danish design classics. Time and again, however, touches of personal taste are evident, whether through the art on the wall, floral arrangements or—of course—books. The largest of the four apartments is the Origami Apartment, with space for seven people. The 80 square meters are flooded with light thanks to windows overlooking the garden. From the living room there is direct access to the terrace—and to the lake. Because Malchow is located in the middle of the Mecklenburg Lake District and, as an “island town”, is surrounded by water on all sides. There is similar space in the Okyu apartment on the upper floor, with a shared balcony. Four people each are accommodated in the Namdo and Hanami Apartments. Each apartment has its own individual charm—so it’s worth coming back!
