ImTal.
On warm days, enjoy a hearty snack in a mountain pasture to the sound of cowbells, jump into a crystal-clear mountain lake, and breathe in the scent of meadows and clear mountain air while hiking. Or in the winter, you can glide down the slopes, marvel at the white splendor and listen to the snow crunching underfoot feet on a snowshoe hike. Anyone who has spent time between high peaks and gentle valleys knows that a vacation in the mountains simply makes you happy. One place where you’re very likely to experience this feeling is in Salzburger Land, one of the most beautiful and varied regions in the Alps. Right here, in Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße, the sisters Elisabeth and Katharina Unterberger have now opened the “Im Tal” hostel for vacation guests. Their grandparents used to run a small farm here, and the two women grew up here with strong ties to the village. They have brought a breath of fresh air and tradition to their new accommodation, a combination that gives it its special charm. The townhouses with their wooden façades in a restrained Scandinavian style are called “Zwei Schwestern” (Two Sisters) and “Drei Brüder” (Three Brothers), indicating that family ties are very important to the Unterbergers. Which is true. The two sisters were born into hospitality through their parents. The family business, the Taxhof, which has been run for five hundred years and is now in its eleventh generation, is located very close by, 1020 meters above the village. The cozy atmosphere that prevails there can also be felt in the new accommodation in the valley. Elisabeth and Katharina have chosen natural and sustainable materials and colors for the harmonious interior, which they also like to surround themselves with, and much of the furniture is custom-made by a local carpenter. We also feel right at home here. Why is that? Well, everything is so beautifully calm and the warm, local wood makes us feel close to nature inside—but, above all, it’s because of the surrounding mountains that dominate the view so wonderfully through the large windows.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- How successfully the Nordic design, inspired by nature and pared back to the essentials, and the alpine mountain world come together here
- The kitchen units in matt black which contrast with metro tiles in soft gray.
- How well design classics such as the Wishbone Chair by Carl Hansen & Søn or the Flowerpot lamp by &Traditon come into their own in the understated ambience
- The surrounding picturesque mountain panorama, because the majestic peaks automatically create a sense of serenity
- A true place of longing after a day on skis, in hiking boots or on a mountain bike: The sauna in the basement of the “Drei Brüder” accommodation, which can be used by all guests
- The “Genuss-Schrank” or “indulgence cupboard”, where the name says it all. Syrup, honey, jams and other delights from farmers and small producers in the region can be found here and purchased by guests.
- Fancy some boiled beef with root vegetables and apple horseradish, mountain thyme soup or spinach dumplings? Because homemade tastes best, guests have the option of ordering pre-cooked dishes three times a week, which they can heat up themselves in their own kitchen.
- The great location! The relaxed village of Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße is located on the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park, between Zell am See and the village of Kaprun with the Kitzsteinhorn glacier ski area. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road begins in the center at “Kilometer 0”. It leads to great heights and offers spectacular views of the mountains.
- The many facets of Salzburger Land, from flatlands with rivers and lakes to mountain peaks with an altitude of more than 3,600 meters—all kinds of landscapes can be found here: Wide meadows and fields, shady forests, striking glaciers, gorges and ravines.
- Experience a real alpine feeling—with “Frittatensuppe” (Austrian pancake soup), Kaiserschmarrn pancakes, cheese spaetzle and Styrian rowanberry schnapps as a nightcap. Elisabeth and Katharina are happy to reveal which are their favorite huts. steirischem Vogelbeerschnaps als Absacker.
