Lighthouse Hotel & Spa

Entering the lobby of the Lighthouse Hotel & Spa in Büsum, you’ll be greeted with a friendly “Hello!” Quickly fixing your hair, which may have been tousled by the North Sea wind, you’ll soon realize what a wonderful place you’ve actually landed in. Just a moment ago, you were outside in the coastal town with its historic charm, and now you’re suddenly surrounded by urban-industrial design: Chesterfield sofas, finds such as an antique typewriter, coffee table books, plus subtle maritime details alluding to the location. Opened in 2019 by Heimathafen Hotels, it is situated between the Wadden Sea, the lighthouse, and the museum harbor—a place where crab boats once docked and historic ships now moor. The interior focuses on telling stories about the coast and the sea, but without resorting to clichés. A real wow factor: Three of the suites were furnished by renowned designers—Hamburg-based interior professionals Cosman, Italian brand Gervasoni, and Danish label TineK Home. All accommodations, the three restaurants, two bars, and the Ocean Spa are spread across interconnected brick harbor houses. Despite its size, the hotel looks like an ensemble of different small buildings, allowing it to fit harmoniously into the cozy atmosphere of the fishing village. The best way to spend your days here is to take a Nordic approach and find out which of the many feel-good spots tops the list: The fireplace in the lobby on cool days, the panoramic sauna with a view of the Wadden Sea, the Landgang restaurant, where you can feast on plaice fillets while watching fish being smoked or the rustic Alter Speicher fishermen’s pub. Impossible

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • How the hotel has been divided into small sections, reminiscent of old harbor warehouses—with a touch of Hampton’s style
  • The blend of maritime influences and industrial design in the interiors—elegant, casual, and urban
  • The large spiral staircase connecting the two levels of the building is inspired by lighthouse architecture, matching the beacon attached to the northwest gable of the building.
  • You’ll immediately feel at home in the rooms. Between decorative wood structures on the walls, soft colors, simple Scandinavian furniture, and lovely accents, you can make yourself comfortable here.
  • The selection of different restaurants and bars. Whether down-to-earth at Landgang, upscale at Schnüsch, at Hafenkantine for a quick snack, at Alten Speicher for a nightcap or at De Baar for a Negroni or frozen cappuccino—they all have their own unique flair. The outdoor terrace with sea views is also a really great place to enjoy yourself.
  • The panoramic windows in the sauna and relaxation rooms of the Ocean Spa with a view of the harbor or the mudflats
  • The bathrobe tunnel! The hotel is connected to the Meerzeit Büsum Wellenbad und Spa water park by a specially designed passageway, so you can change in your room and stroll over in your loungewear.
  • The great welcome gift for all guests: A complimentary filled minibar!
  • The large variety offered by the breakfast buffet—there’s something for every taste and everything is of very high quality.
  • The hotel is a certified member of Feinheimisch – Genuss aus Schleswig-Holstein, an alliance which primarily uses regional products and is visibly committed to the environmentally friendly and sustainable use of products. The Lighthouse also has its own farm with a cheese dairy and butchery.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • The Lighthouse Hotel & Spa has 111 individual rooms, suites, and apartments, offering a choice of harbor, sea or lighthouse views.
  • The three apartments are 32 square meters in size, suitable for two people, and have a kitchen.
  • If you want to treat yourself to something special, check into one of the four suites: The Cosman Suite with steam bath, the Lighthouse Suite with private sauna, bathtub with sea view and two balconies, the Wittmann Suite, where Austrian craftsmanship meets Nordic serenity or the Lindbergh Suite with brick wall, black steel, and its own sauna.
  • Depending on your taste, you can start the day with a large buffet in the Landgang or in the Hafenkantine with a small, but fine selection of breakfast classics. Both can be booked as an optional extra.
  • For the journey home, you can stock up on homemade cakes, sandwiches and coffee, all of which are available to take away from the Hafenkantine.
  • The Ocean Spa has 10 treatment rooms, three saunas, and a whirlpool. Use of these facilities is included in the price of your stay. Floating or soft pack treatments must be booked separately.
  • The spa is for adults (aged 16 and over); children can enjoy the family-friendly Meerzeit Büsum Wellenbad und Spa, which is free for hotel guests and can be accessed directly from the hotel (through that bathrobe tunnel...).
  • Gentlemen can treat themselves to some grooming in the hotel’s own barbershop with a view of the harbor.
  • The coastal town of Büsum combines historic charm with a spirit of optimism, surrounded by unspoiled nature. Things to do here: Mudflat hiking, water sports, and swimming right in front of the hotel or in the Perlebucht family lagoon, walks on the dike, and enjoying lots of fresh sea air.
  • Take a day trip to Heligoland or a boat trip to one of the largest seal banks on the German North Sea coast, where you can watch the seals from the deck.
  • If it rains (which can happen in the far north), umbrellas can be borrowed from reception.
  • If you feel like pedaling across the dike and feeling the wind in your hair, you can rent a bike directly at the hotel.
  • The Lighthouse also houses a few shops: The Lütt & Fien delicatessen offers chocolates, wines, oils, and spices from the region and around the world; fashion is available at Lindbergh or 5 Secrets.
  • It can be reached by train. From the train station, it’s about a kilometer’s walk to the Lighthouse.
