Mama Thresl
“Urban soul meets the Alps!” The mama thresl credo sums up exactly why everyone feels so at home here: There’s a pure chalet vibe, a strong sense of place and all the amenities of a hotel. Thresl is the name of owner Renate Oberlander’s mother, who brought “mama thresl” to life together with her husband Huwi in 2014. The Oberlanders envisioned a hotel with real home comforts and commissioned the architecture firm W2 Manufaktur from Leogang to design the eye-catching three-story building. The fifty rooms with picture-perfect panoramic views of the mountains show just how informally the ideas of nature, home, sport, coolness and coziness can be combined. The natural world has been brought inside: Rugged rock and wonderfully fragrant Swiss stone pine furniture with rounded profiles can be found in the rooms. Some of the rooms have their own roof terrace and private hot tub. From bed to the slopes is the motto in winter (in summer, from bed to bike), the “Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn” is now the largest interconnected ski area in Austria. mama thresl offers culinary delights throughout the day—there’s the option of a late breakfast, a very extensive lunch, a hip dinner and sparkling signature drinks at the bar in the evening. Guests can also relax in the phenomenal panoramic sauna with a view of the Steinberge mountains or in the rock shower, in the open-air room, the beautiful, organically shaped room with “Rest Cove” bunks or in the quiet “Empty Room” where you can absorb the magic of the Alps by the crackling open fire—ultimate relaxation.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- A hotel with an indoor and an outdoor climbing wall: Let’s get to the top! An almost seven-meter-high rock in front of the entrance leads to the second floor via a rope bridge and then over the side of the building and to the roof.
- All of the hotel rooms are constructed from Austrian stone pine wood (it smells wonderful).
- The beautiful rooms offer great views of the mountains, the rounded profiles of the Swiss stone pine furniture create a comfortable feel.
- The rock walls in the showers and the rock washbasins are very unusual.
- The long rock table with plenty of chairs in front of the fireplace offers space for large groups.
- The catering is supplied with produce from local farmers.
- Kaaita slippers made from recycled plastic bottles are available to keep your feet warm. Over the course of six years, 132,000 plastic bottles have been transformed into cozy slippers.
- The beautiful “Empty Room” with phenomenal views of the Leogang mountains (with fireplace, seating and lounging areas) is worth a visit in itself.
- The Finnish sauna with a view of the Steinberge mountains, cooling rock shower and open-air room is just the thing for aching muscles; the organically shaped “Rest Coves” offer pure relaxation.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- Each room has its own balcony or terrace, as well as its own ski or bike safe. No long searches in the morning, you can head straight up to the mountains!
- Getting places is fun: The “mountain’s peak” roof terrace can be reached via a rope walk—a spot of practice, so to speak!
- Great breakfast with everything your heart desires; delicious, freshly prepared tarte flambée and sandwiches are served at lunchtime and, in the evening, you can enjoy dinner at the in-house “grill & chill” restaurant.
- On the mountain, there is the hotel-owned MOUNTAIN CLUB hendl fischerei, a great chalet for guests.
- mama thresl operates a high-quality e-bike rental service to enjoy the 720 kilometers of mountain bike trails and 480 kilometers of valley bike trails in Leogang and the surrounding area to the fullest.
- In summer, there are numerous outdoor options: Horse riding, rafting on the Saalach, swimming (Leogang and Saalfelden adventure pools, lido at Rizensee, Zellersee and Pillersee, plus an indoor pool in Zell, St. Johann or at the Tauern Spa), archery and trail running.
- You can go climbing in the mountains and in bad weather in the climbing hall.
- Die-hards can race through the valley on the longest and fastest zip wire in the world at up to 130 kilometers an hour at an altitude of 1,600 meters.
- For those who like it quieter, there are two golf courses to choose from.
- The whole area is unbeatable in winter: Guided snowshoe hikes, cross-country skiing on 150 kilometers of well-kept trails, toboggan runs, ice skating rinks and of course ski slopes, ski slopes, ski slopes! Almost 500 kilometers of them! After all, taking the same run twice is boring!
- Travelling there by train is also an option—to Saalfelden or to Leogang (www.schnee-express.com).
