My Daum
My Daum sounds a bit like “my dream”—a fitting name for the wonderful aparthotel in South Tyrol’s Val d’Ega. Not only have the hosts fulfilled a dream with this house, but the aparthotel is also a dream vacation destination for guests. The house blends harmoniously into the hillside in a secluded location, with a magnificent view of the 3,000-metre-high peaks of the Brenta Dolomites. The former Daumhof farm (note the hotel’s nod to the name) is now being run by the third generation. In the past, the South Tyrolean farm was home to gray cattle, fields and forests. But Grandma Maria had a vision—both literally and in an entrepreneurial sense. She quickly converted the farm into a guesthouse with guest rooms. Maria’s grandson Peter March has happy childhood memories of this place, so he decided to translate these fond memories and feelings into something tangible. As it was pretty dilapidated, the entrepreneur and passionate innkeeper had his grandparents’ original building demolished. Together with his wife Kordula Denk and the Bolzano-based architecture firm SO architects, managed by Dietmar Fäckl and Brigitte Bertignoll, they designed a house with 12 apartment suites, an infinity pool and a panoramic sauna. Where he used to spend carefree summer days and happy winters is where the new guest house opened its doors in 2022. Spacious apartment suites are available in different sizes, all of which offer a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains thanks to huge panoramic windows facing the valley. Each of the apartment suites has its own balcony or terrace with an outdoor daybed to enjoy the view. The interior features clean lines, a minimalist and modern furnishing style in natural tones and materials such as wood and stone. The panoramic sauna is located above the infinity pool—like a dice casually rolled by giants: Sweating at 90 degrees with a view of the vast surrounding mountains there’s nothing else like it. For the hosts, the new hotel is intended to be a place where you can feel the light-heartedness of your childhood days, where you have the luxury of freedom to do whatever you feel like doing. They have achieved this admirably. It really is “a dream” destination.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- All suites have a great interior with a calm color scheme, minimalist design and great lighting.
- Clean lines and the combination of natural materials such as wood and stone with robust and visible steel beams create a modern loft feeling.
- The architecture was designed to blend in with the natural surroundings and reflect the history. The house was built on a slope, the construction method playing with South Tyrolean traditions such as the shingle-like wooden gable paneling on the façade, and reinterpreting them by using exposed wooden struts and metal beams like in a drawing.
- Leave the curtain open! From the double bed you have a stunning view of the vast, green mountains. There’s no better view to wake up to.
- If you want to relax outside and enjoy some peace and quiet, you have your own daybed to lounge on and indulge in your “daydreams” with a view of the peaks.
- Wooden struts all over: As a light-colored framework, they envelope the building; as a protective shell, they guard the entrance to the pool; as an implied roof on the headboards of the beds, they have a soothing effect on those sleeping.
- If you are too tired to go out in the evening, you can order a food box from the hosts and cook for yourself. And you don’t even have to wash up afterwards, as this is part of the room cleaning service.
- The heated infinity pool is 15 meters long. There’s no better way to start the day.
- The sauna above the pool has huge panoramic windows. There’s no better way to end the day.
- Perfect service: Kordula and Peter are warm hosts who strike the right balance between personal attention and understated professionalism. They create a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
- The well-stocked honesty bar, where drinks and sweet and savory snacks are available for self-service around the clock.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- My Daum has 12 very high-quality suites for couples or solo travelers (it’s not suitable for families with children).
- There are six different types of suites: Pure, Pure +, Pure Space, Pure View, Pure View + and Pure Liberty. They all have their own kitchen, a balcony or terrace with a super-comfortable daybed and a huge panoramic window facing the valley.
- Extras: Pure + has a bathtub, Pure Space even has its own reading room!
- The delicious breakfast buffet with local products—each room has its own table, outside or inside.
- Kitchens and bathrooms can be separated from the sleeping area by curtains or sliding doors.
- The small in-house store with South Tyrolean specialties is definitely worth a visit—for souvenirs or simply to treat yourself.
- There’s a bike storage room, including a charging station. There’s also a cooperation in place with a bike rental company from Deutschnhofen, which brings rental bikes to the hotel and picks them up again from there.
- It takes about half an hour to walk from the hotel to the village of Deutschnofen, about 40 minutes to the nearest mountain pasture and about 40 minutes to Bolzano.
- The Obereggen-Latemar ski area is 1,550 to 2,500 meters above sea level with 49 kilometers of slopes and 18 lifts and is only about ten minutes away by car. Night tobogganing is also available there.
- In summer, the area around Deutschnofen is one of the most beautiful hiking and climbing areas in South Tyrol, offering both easy walks and challenging climbing adventures on the surrounding peaks.
- The Bletterbach gorge and the earth pyramids in Oberbozen also make for a wonderful excursion.
- The most famous pilgrimage church in South Tyrol, Maria Weißenstein, has a high altar made of gold and silver leaf. The basilica, situated at an altitude of 1,520 meters, is visited by countless pilgrims every year; even Pope John Paul II has been there.
