Ohlerich Apartment
Smell the sea air or discover the city? If you can’t decide, you’ll find the best of both worlds in the harbor town of Wismar. Beautiful beaches are just a short trip away; there’s a charming old town, which is a World Heritage Site, and a lot of maritime flair in the harbor offering fish sandwiches and cutter watching. The balcony (and the sofa! And the swing!) of the Ohlerich Apartment in a listed granary offers a wonderful view of the picture-postcard bustle of the old town and harbor. The 55-square-meter vacation apartment is extremely photogenic. With its concrete floors, black kitchen units and color scheme in black, white and gray, it’s a mix of cool loft and industrial monument. Some of the things from its former life as a grain silo were simply incorporated into the new home without further ado. For example, two old pouring pipes were allowed to remain, an old sink decorates the kitchen wall and historic doors were transformed into sliding doors or now serve as a tabletop. The two creative owners from Berlin have meticulously studied the past of the listed warehouse building from 1938 and added many loving details such as Bakelite switches, industrial lamps and, above all, photos and prints. Just the right mix of modern coolness and respect for the past that you want for this place.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The dedication that the two lovely owners have furnished the apartment with. For over two years, the pair of them sifted through and refurbished historic components of the warehouse and sourced other original artifacts. The history and remodeling were meticulously researched and documented.
- The colors white, black and gray have a very calming effect and make everything appear very spacious.
- The open plan cooking and dining area
- A lot of attention has been paid to details, but also to sustainability: The kitchen surface is made of recycled plastic, the mattress is made of natural latex and a Nespresso machine has been omitted for environmental reasons (but of course you can still make your morning and afternoon coffee).
- The view from the balcony over the old town and the harbor (and sometimes on a cruise ship or a Ferris wheel)
- The great location directly at the harbor—you’re right in the midst of the action and the sights, cafes and restaurants are within walking distance.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- The Ohlerich Speicher lay dormant for many years. In 2015, it was renovated and now exclusively houses vacation apartments.
- On the first floor of the building, there’s a restaurant where you can also have breakfast. For further services and if you have any questions there’s also a reception, so you almost feel like you’re in a hotel.
- Photographs and prints created especially for the apartment can be purchased in the online store.
- There are many beautiful beaches in the vicinity of Wismar, but they are not within walking distance. The closest (but not necessarily the most beautiful) beach is in the Wendorf district of Wismar. Fans of beautiful natural beaches will be thrilled by Brooker Strand in Klützer Winkel and the three-kilometer-long Wohlenberger Wiek. Those who prefer a bit more hustle and bustle and like to stroll along a beach promenade will find what they’re looking for at Timmendorf Strand, for example, on the island of Poel.
- There are two e-bikes available for guests to use.
