Pergola Residence & Spazio 46

The twelve suites and two penthouses of the Pergola Residence are terraced along the hillside of Algund, as if they were part of the vineyards. Opened in 2004 by Ruth and Josef Innerhofer, this is a place to lie back and breathe easy, especially for guests who would rather follow their own rhythm while on vacation, and rather not have to dress up for breakfast in the morning. The apartments bear the signature of South Tyrol-born architect Matteo Thun. Thanks to his use of local materials and subtle proportions, his buildings seem to blend into the hilly landscape – an approach that the owners have maintained. Twenty years after the Pergola Residence opened, Josef’s daughter Karin Innerhofer began the next chapter of the property’s story: on the hillside above the apartment complex, she created Spazio 46. Its concrete construction has a young and modernist feel, but fits into the landscape just as well as the original structures. The new building has an emphasis on the wellness factor: an infinity pool on the roof, a panoramic sauna, and an open-air gym offer glorious views of the surrounding area. Architect and designer Hannes Peer, who also hails from the region, is the interior designer. In the luxury Loft 46 apartment for two, he combines local craftsmanship with cosmopolitan design standards. By combining elegant surfaces, vintage furniture in the style of the 1960s, like the sofa lounge around the freestanding fireplace, and custom-made elements, such as the intricately crafted wooden room divider, he draws on the craftsmanship of regional artisans and reinterprets it at the same time. As different as the architecture of the two buildings may be, what connects them is their sense of place. They are the ideal address for nature-loving connoisseurs who value their privacy.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The perfect blend of hotel and vacation apartment: instead of at a reception desk, guests are welcomed in the living room.
  • Both Spazio 46 and the Pergola Residence blend harmoniously into the landscape. Both architects come from South Tyrol and know what suits the area.
  • Whether it's the wooden table or the sofa cover, the feel of the artistic details in Loft 46 will delight aesthetes.
  • Plenty of space: no one has to step on anyone else's toes in the spacious suites.
  • Green roofs in the Pergola Residence support climate management and save energy.
  • Building materials and furniture are locally sourced, thus contributing to the regional economy.
  • The lounge is the perfect gathering space: here you can immerse yourself in the selection of daily newspapers, magazines, and books, plan your next hiking routes while sampling Ruth's legendary cakes, or mix a drink or cocktail at the honesty bar.
  • Your own private wine cellar, housed within 16th-century walls.
  • Spazio 46 has a rooftop pool open all year round, a gym, and a Finnish sauna. They are also available to guests of the Pergola Residence. Guests can also enjoy the yoga and Pilates sessions on offer.
  • The name says it all: each apartment has its own vine-covered pergola.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Croissants and rolls can be ordered the day before (for a fee) and are left at the door in the morning for breakfast.
  • A selection of regional foods is available in the small bottega.
  • Each kitchen is perfectly equipped, including Nespresso and filter coffee machines.
  • An indoor pool with spa, steam bath, and Finnish sauna offers perfect relaxation on cooler days; the outdoor pool is open all year round—it is not heated in the depths of winter, but a cold splash after the sauna is also a treat.
  • Swimming 24/7: Guests can switch the outdoor pool lighting on and off themselves.
  • Massages and energetic body treatments can be booked in all houses, as well as private yoga and Pilates sessions.
  • Natural cosmetics produced in Merano are available for guests.
  • Long stay or workation – longer stays are possible at both the Pergola Residence and Spazio 46.
  • Four e-charging stations and ample parking are available for guests.
  • Hiking trails to various alpine pastures start directly from the accommodation. Merano is three kilometers away via the Walweg trail.
  • There are numerous restaurants serving regional cuisine in the surrounding area.
