Schnitzbichlhof

Framed, this panoramic view would make a fantastic poster: Slightly elevated above the roofs of the village of Lana near Merano, the Schnitzbichlhof nestles between vineyards and apple orchards, with mountain peaks rising majestically into the sky in the background. As for the palm tree in front of the façade with its surrounding wooden balconies, this visually captures what the South Tyrol feeling is all about: A combination of Alpine flair and a little bit of dolce vita. Karin and Julian (actually a nurse and a banker) took over the farm from Karin’s father and live there with their son Moritz and greyhound Berkie. They’ve renovated the house with a great deal of passion, and the support of the architectural firm Biquadra, lending it a very unique character. Rural tradition meets boutique hotel design with a casual 80s vibe that the couple have deliberately preserved: Earthy, warm colors, natural materials, and a little retro twist here and there. Five newly renovated apartments and a double room can be found on the farm, along with an outdoor pool with a view of the countryside, and a farm shop selling many homemade products. The furnishings are high-quality and sustainable through and through: The accommodations feature wooden floors, the furniture has been custom-made by a local carpenter, and old favorite pieces have been lovingly restored. It’s a place where you immediately feel comfortable and welcome, which speaks volumes about the warmth of the host couple. Sometimes, they barbecue or cook together with their guests and, in the fall, they roast chestnuts or sample the new wine with them. This makes you want to stay longer—or plan your next visit right away.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • Old pieces have been given a new lease of life: Although the lamp base is the same, the shade has been reupholstered. Things from days gone by have been given a new coat of paint, and the retro coffee service is enjoying a minor renaissance.
  • The harmonious mix of rustic roots and a dash of boutique charm
  • How the cool 80s vibe is combined with modern elements, linear design, and bold colors
  • Spontaneous get-togethers and good conversations with other guests happen in the common room.
  • The farm shop, which forms the heart of the Schnitzbichlhof. With its (very stylish) green corduroy sofa and light wood, it’s so cozy that you’ll want to settle in and make yourself at home—with a glass of wine and a good book, for example.
  • The dedicated owners, Karin and Julian, who are always up for a quick chat or an insider tip—whether it’s about bacon, restaurants, or hidden corners of South Tyrol.
  • Jumping into the garden’s seasonal pool on warm days! The view of the mountains is unbeatable, and you can while away the time on beautiful wooden loungers in the shade of retro parasols.
  • The large garden is a kingdom for kids with plenty of space to run, romp, and play. The farm offers everything you need for a relaxing family vacation.
  • The location: Beautifully secluded for peace and quiet, but still not off the beaten track. The village center of Lana is within walking distance, Merano is just a 15-minute drive away, and hiking trails start right from the farm. Traditional Törggele dishes await you in the surrounding restaurants—from dumplings and Schlutzkrapfen to apple strudel.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • The Schnitzbichlhof has five renovated, super-comfortable apartments (for two to four people), ranging in size from 35 to 65 square meters, and one double room that can be booked in addition—all have a great view, some also have a terrace or access to the garden.
  • Breakfast isn’t included in the room rate. However, fresh bread rolls and pastries can be delivered to your door every day on request. The farm shop stocks everything else you might need: Coffee, milk, tea, fruit juices, yogurt, butter, seasonal fruit, eggs, honey, muesli, fruit spreads, and dried fruit, much of which is produced on the farm.
  • The five apartments have fully equipped kitchens where you can transform the excellent ingredients from the farm shop into your own favorite creations.
  • Don’t feel like leaving the house? You can stock up on drinks at the honesty bar in the farm shop.
  • The price includes the South Tyrol Pass, which allows you to use public transport free of charge.
  • If you need hiking or sports equipment, you can ask your hosts for backpacks, poles, or snowshoes. Bikes and other sports equipment can be stored in the lockable garage.
  • Baby beds and high chairs are available on request for younger guests.
  • If, for once, the South Tyrolean sun isn’t shining, board games, puzzles, and books can be found in the farm shop.
  • The fresh spring water available on the farm is unbeatable (any other mineral water is really no competition).
  • A charging station for electric cars is also available. Arriving by public transport? Hosts will happily arrange for guests to be picked up from the nearest train or bus station.
  • Something to look forward to: From 2026, the rustic Schnitzbichlhof sauna with relaxation room and terrace will be ready to use. A playground for children is also in the planning stage.
