Holiday apartment, Germany, Black Forest

stub saig

Slowly, word is getting out: The Black Forest can also be cool! Even the classic cuckoo clock—one of the typical German symbols of home—has made the leap into the modern age. Since the artist Stefan Strumbel reinterpreted it in pop art style and with street art motifs, it’s celebrated worldwide success. The new gastro and hotel scene also has little to do with traditional hunter romanticism. For example, a young enthusiastic team has converted several houses into cool vacation apartments under the name “stuub”—meaning parlor, it’s the only thing here that still has a traditional Black Forest ring to it, though. The stuub saig is now the latest project. In the midst of a dreamlike idyllic picture-book landscape in the Black Forest lies what looks like a traditional house, which has been extended by light wooden annexes. Eight beautiful studios and apartments of various sizes await guests here. You can cook in your own apartment or in the large stuub—the eat-in kitchen on the first floor. This is a great way to get to know the other guests. In the pretty town of Lenzkirch-Saig, not far from Lake Titisee, the stuub apartments and studios offer a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere—and a breathtaking view of the green wooded valley. Wood plays an important role in the stuub saig. The floors, the super-comfortable beds, partly the walls and the timbered bench at the dining table—warm wood tones everywhere create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The matt black kitchen against a powder pink wall is a great match. Each apartment has its own balcony or terrace. In some, a wooden ladder leads to the bedroom(s); in the studios, everything is in one room. An altogether resounding success. The only thing missing is the cuckoo clocks by Stefan Strumbel.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The apartments look stylish and modern—no Black Forest kitsch to be seen anywhere.
  • Light wood dominates in all apartments, creating a wonderful ambience to stay in.
  • The pared-back furnishing style, which concentrates on the essentials
  • Guests can use their own cool matt black kitchen (with pretty powder pink wall) or meet in the large communal kitchen.
  • The bathrooms all have a lovely rain shower.
  • The top-equipped kitchens, with everything you need to feel at home
  • The large selection of books in the stuub, the communal room
  • Each apartment has its own balcony or terrace and the view into the valley is simply beautiful.
  • A good choice of apartments, with beds for one to five guests. You can share the apartments with your dearest friends or your extended family and use the large kitchen-living room together.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • Children are welcome and baby beds are available on request.
  • The large living room with kitchen can also be booked exclusively for a family or group of friends.
  • Towels and natural cosmetic products from “Stop the Water While Using Me” are available in the bathrooms.
  • In the property, the best tips for the region are provided by app—for example, where to find the best pizza in the area.
  • The location is a great starting point for excursions in the area: The Titisee and the Schluchsee lakes are not far away; monasteries, castles and ruins are also here in abundance, along with the highest waterfalls in Germany, the Triberger waterfalls (walkable all year round and illuminated in the evening until 10 pm), and the wild and romantic Wutachschlucht, the largest canyon in Germany.
  • The famous Feldberg (highest peak in the Black Forest) and the unknown Herzogenhorn (second highest peak in the Black Forest) are worthwhile destinations.
  • Lovers of historic railroads will whoop: A total of eight historic railroad lines crisscross the Black Forest.
  • The Black Forest offers a wealth of culinary highlights: More than 400 restaurants and chefs are awarded stars, toques, diamonds, gourmet points or chef’s spoons year after year.
  • In the village, there’s ski rental, because the Black Forest is also a beautiful ski destination with 74 lifts; snowshoeing and tobogganing down to Lake Titisee is also an option.
  • It’s about 40 kilometers to Freiburg.
  • Online check-in is available between 3 and 11 pm. In case of any issues, the team will be happy to help you.
  • An extra bonus: Every booking helps to support a project for the preservation of the endangered capercaillie in the Black Forest.
