Telfnerhof
We often feel most at home in houses that tell stories. Ones where natural stone walls, perfectly imperfect wooden beams and softly creaking wooden doors remind us of yesterday. It’s even more beautiful when history is combined with contemporary design and comfort. The 14th century mill on the Telfnerhof farm in South Tyrol, which has been converted into a vacation home, is one of those places. The listed ensemble comprises the frescoed farmhouse and its outbuildings. Located in Verdings above the artists’ town of Klausen in the Eisack Valley, it’s surrounded by pure nature—meadows, fruit trees and forests. The mill had a very special status for a long time, as the farming family used to be self-sufficient. Having stood idle for the last 40 years, the hosts decided to carefully renovate this unique building. The interior was designed with wild oak fixtures, designer furniture in anthracite and wonderful, soft carpets. Details such as the wrought-iron banisters and the antique door fittings have been given a whole new lease of life. The lounge corners in front of the window fronts are really inviting. From there, you can enjoy the view of the meadow orchard and the mountain panorama—a premium spot for sure. Younger guests in particular love getting even closer to nature and immersing themselves in farm life, helping with the haymaking or picking raspberries and currants. But you’re just as welcome to stretch out on all fours here—it’s not for nothing that there are so many secluded corners to do this. When the Schlern mountain massif glows reddish in the evening light, the view from the sunbathing lawn or the gazebo is unbeatable—especially when combined with a cup of the farm’s own elderberry tea or a glass of good South Tyrolean wine.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The generous window fronts that offer a clear view of the orchard, mountains, forests and the valley
- The casual interior with the carpenter-made kitchen (the natural stone slab from the Passeier Valley is also really great! ), custom-made furniture made from wild oak and the bunk-style bed
- The natural garden with a small fountain and a Hollywood swing for really good vibes
- The loden-covered upholstered furniture, the wood-burning stove and the underfloor heating make it feel cozy on chilly days.
- The location of the farm in the middle of untouched nature, which automatically makes us relax
- Interested guests are also allowed to help with the animals: Giving the calves water or bringing hay to the cows—the little ones love it so a fantastic reason to plan the next vacation here right away.
- The outdoor adventures awaiting right on the doorstep: A natural pond for swimming or having fun in rubber dinghies, the surrounding woods for walking and extensive forest bathing
- Make yourself comfortable around the fire pit in the garden in the evening and allow your thoughts to wander to the meditative snapping and crackling of the flames.
- The old farmhouse with its frescoes, located opposite the mill, which has been lovingly renovated while preserving its historic structure
- The 100-year-old apple, pear, chestnut, walnut, cherry and plum trees around the building ensemble are real stars: The Telfnerhof’s orchard was voted the most beautiful in South Tyrol!
GOOD TO KNOW:
- The vacation home extends over three floors, offering enough room to sleep four people in a box-spring bed and a bunk bed; there’s also a garden with terrace.
- The price includes firewood for the fireplace, herbs and spices from the organic garden and the South Tyrolean Guest Pass, which provides free access to public transport.
- Freshly harvested produce from the organic garden is available to guests at cost price. Fruit spreads, apple juice, dried fruit and dried herbs from the farm are available in the accommodation’s “produce corner”. Fresh milk is also available free of charge.
- Younger guests in particular will love the tree house with children’s kitchen, the small soccer pitch, table tennis, table football, sandpit, swing, slide and hammock.
- The mill is equipped with games and reading material to keep boredom at bay even on rainy days.
- For those traveling in larger groups, the farm also has another vacation home. The wooden chalet has a double room and a children’s room with three bunk beds spread over two floors.
- The Telfnerhof is a great starting point for walks, hikes and mountain tours for all levels. The Unesco World Heritage Site of the Dolomites is easily accessible by car or bus.
- Fancy even more exercise? Tennis, splashing around in the fun swimming pools in Klausen and Felthurns or in natural swimming lakes, mountain bike tours in the mountains and on the slopes in winter—there’s plenty to do here in terms of sporting activities.
- If you like culture, you can visit museums, theaters and concerts in Klausen and Brixen—or feast on South Tyrolean or Italian cuisine.
- You can go shopping in the surrounding villages of Verdings, Feldthurns and Latzfons or in Brixen and Klausen.
- You can get here by public transport. Take the train to Bressanone/Brixen station, then continue by bus. A pick-up service is also available by arrangement.
