Villa Maissen

A wrought-iron gate leads into the garden with lilac bushes and fruit trees, climbing plants, and boxwood balls. In the middle of this idyll stands Villa Maissen, built 150 years ago, with its decorative architecture and light gray shutters. The villa and its garden are surrounded by the houses of the village of Trun, nestled in a wooded hilly landscape in the Swiss canton of Grisons. Which season is best for a visit? The answer is clear: all of them! In spring, when the garden is a sea of lush blossoms; in summer, when you can seek shade under old trees with a good book; in autumn, when everything is bathed in golden light; or in winter, when the landscape is blanketed in pristine snow. The villa’s interior is equally beautiful all year round. It has two spacious apartments, the “Tal” (the valley) on the ground floor and the “Berg” (the mountain) upstairs. The “Tal” has light-filled rooms with original herringbone parquet flooring,decorated with minimalist furniture, a mix of real wood pieces, design classics, and vintage items. The theme continues in the “Berg,” with a focus on black and white. Vibrant contrasts are created by textiles and accessories in bright colors. And because the hosts know that daydreaming is one of their guests’ favorite activities, they have outfitted each apartment with comfortable seating near the windows. For anyone whose ability to relax has gotten lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the view of the changing lights on the Swiss mountains will certainly let them find it again.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

• The casual mix of rural charm and contemporary urban interior design.
• The colorful splashes of color in the form of paintings and multicolored carpets, which lend the apartments a feel of warmth and coziness.
• The large windows that let in plenty of daylight and offer a great view of the surrounding landscape.
• The special pieces of décor that each tells its own story: a painted farmhouse cabinet, vintage medicine cabinets – but most of all the antique soapstone stoves, which are no longer usable but make great decorations.
• The Bezzera portafilter machine in the “Berg” apartment – a revelation for every coffee lover.
• That so much emphasis is put on a good night’s sleep. You can slumber in beds made of 100 percent wood with bedding made of natural materials and wake up to a wonderful view.
• Speaking of relaxation: both apartments have a bathtub where you can warm up after long walks and days on the slopes.
• Sitting by the fire pit in the garden in summer and ending the day under the starry sky.
• The unspoiled natural surroundings around the village of Trun, with hiking trails and spectacular views.

GOOD TO KNOW:

• The “Tal” vacation apartment is 90 square meters and, with its two double rooms, is suitable for 4 people. It has a small balcony and a fully equipped kitchen.
• The “Berg” vacation apartment is also 90 square meters and suitable for 4 people. It has two bedrooms and a kitchen with everything you need.
• If the weather is not so great, reading material for young and old as well as children's toys are available in the apartments.
• In the spirit of Zen-like deceleration, there are no TVs in the apartments, but there is WiFi and a sound system.
• The front garden area with seating and a fire pit, barbecue, and accessories is available for guests to use.
• There are many hiking trails with spectacular views around the house.
• The ski cellar with boot dryer ensures dry and warm footwear for your next mountain adventures.
• There are four ski areas nearby: Brigels and Obersaxen are both 10 minutes away, Disentis/Sedrun is about 20 minutes away, and Flims/Laax is about 25 minutes away.
• For those who enjoy being around water, we recommend a refreshing dip in the picturesque mountain lake Lac da Laus on warm days, and in the cooler months, the thermal baths in Vals, designed by star architect Peter Zumthor
• You can travel by train to the station in Trun.
