Buitenhuys 20

An outdoor bathtub, nestled into a wooden platform on the terrace, with a view of the trees of the Veluwe: Huisje 20 surprises you right from the very first detail. Immersed in nature, gazing up at the treetops, accompanied by the sound of birdsong. The emerald-green cottage is tucked away in Dennenrhode Forest Park, a colorful collection of small houses surrounded by the forests of the Veluwe. Here, you’ll wake up to the sunshine, go and sip your morning coffee on the veranda, roll out your yoga mat, and lose yourself in a good book without any distractions. The home’s unique character has been curated by Mariëlle Leenen and Tobias Koch—a German-Dutch couple who, after stints in New York and Berlin, now live in Amsterdam with their sons. The two designers—operating under the name Familie Buitenhuys—rent out several vacation homes in North Holland, Brabant, and the Veluwe that they’ve renovated, creatively designed, and revitalized themselves, inspired by their travels and the places where they’ve lived. Huisje 20 defies convention, too: Checkerboard-patterned and Oriental-style rugs, designer wallpaper that brings the forest into the living room, and many small, thoughtful details give the 35-square-meter cottage its special flair. Thanks to creative built-ins, the accommodation feels more spacious than its actual size would suggest. And when the sun is shining, life naturally moves outside—onto one of the two terraces. The surrounding vacation park, with its quaint forest restaurant and shared outdoor pool, exudes a peaceful, almost nostalgic atmosphere.

WHAT WE LOVE MOST:

  • The warm bronze tones combined with dark green fixtures and lighting, which harmonize perfectly, making the bungalow feel even cozier
  • Inspired features like the raised platform or the ’magic wall’, which conceals the shower, make the small house feel much more spacious.
  • The large L-shaped sofa with a velvety cover, where you can really snuggle up with extra blankets and pillows
  • So many creative ideas have been incorporated into the interior design, such as a wall covered in sturdy fabric, the forest-themed wallpaper, retro light switches, and a toilet with disco lights.
  • The old record player with a small selection of vinyl records
  • The open layout makes everything feel nice and airy; plenty of natural light floods into the house, and you can enjoy the verdant views from indoors.
  • In the natural garden, everything is allowed to grow as it pleases—making it feel like an extension of the forest. Since it is surrounded by trees and shrubs, it feels wonderfully secluded and private here.
  • The outdoor living areas: The large dining table with benches on a wooden platform, as well as the patio at the back of the house. With rugs and light-colored wood, they feel like living spaces outdoors; wooden fences enclose the property and ensure privacy.
  • The unbeatable option of lying in the bathtub under the starry sky, having an evening soak while playfully whistling.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • The detached wooden cottage Huisje 20, with 35 square meters of living space and a private garden, accommodates two people plus a baby. It’s perfect for couples, friends, those seeking peace and quiet, nature lovers, or for a workation.
  • There’s a ceiling fan above the bed. There’s also a portable fan for hot summer days, plus blackout curtains.
  • The small, but charming, kitchen is equipped with a gas stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, and a basic supply of coffee, tea, cereal, pasta, herbs, salt, pepper, olive oil, and small treats.
  • There’s a yoga mat in the cottage—for your morning routine in the shade of the trees.
  • The vacation park features a communal outdoor pool, open during the summer months, as well as a forest restaurant.
  • If you’re in the mood for culture, head to Elburg with its well-preserved 14th-century fortress, harbor, and wonderful shops. Harderwijk, with its charming downtown, is also worth a visit.
  • From the cottage, you can set out directly on a hike or bike ride through several nature reserves, featuring heathlands, sand dunes, and dense forests.
  • The historic Hanseatic cities of Elburg (10 minutes by car) and Zwolle (about 25 minutes by car) are also worth a visit; Amsterdam is about 70 minutes away.
  • The journey to Buitenhuys 20 is designed to take you a step away from everyday life. The easiest way to get there is by car, taking you right to the doorstep. It’s also possible to travel by train—via Nunspeet, followed by a short ride by bus or taxi—the final kilometers leading you through the Veluwe countryside.
