Casa al sole
The mighty peaks of the Dolomites tower into the sky, dense fir forests and green hills line the lush valley. Here lies the South Tyrolean village of St. Ulrich, with its onion-domed churches and gabled houses, and Casa al Sole, with its rust-red façade and white-framed box windows. Built in the 1930s in the Italian rationalist architectural style, it was renovated and redesigned in 2020 by owners Manuel and Alexandra, with a great deal of passion and a keen eye for aesthetics. The couple preserved as much of the original as possible in order to retain the building’s character. Natural materials such as larch wood, natural stone, clay, and loden give the interior a Scandinavian look. The bed and breakfast’s twelve rooms extend over two floors and are furnished with modern chrome and raw steel furniture, combined with favorite pieces from days gone by. Surrounded by the “most beautiful open-air gym in the world,” the Val Gardena valley, you can spend the day under a bright blue sky (the chances are actually very good here!) and fresh mountain air playing sports, walking among wildflowers, swimming in the lake, or picking mushrooms. Back at their home-away-from-home, guests are drawn to the house bar with its upholstered cocktail chairs, where they can chat over relaxing music, organic wine, and craft beer. On warm evenings, the terrace is the place to be to watch as the sun, with its last rays of the day, bathes the “pale mountains” in glowing red. Undisputedly the best moment of the day.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The minimalist design: everything has been chosen with care and a sense of the essentials – clean and unobtrusive, yet atmospheric.
- The perfect blend of comfort, style, and authenticity.
- That many original elements from the building's construction period could be preserved during the renovation, from the herringbone parquet flooring to the restored box windows and doors.
- The unique color of the façade was achieved by mixing the exterior plaster with Val Gardena sandstone.
- The special eye-catchers, like the smooth polished concrete in the bathrooms, the original floors, the heavy loden curtains, and the unique retro-style pieces.
- The house bar with cocktail chairs from days gone by. A great place to relax, enjoy drinks and snacks such as farmer's toast or anchovies from the Cantabrian Sea with farmer's butter and fresh bread.
- Breakfast, which is a little different every day. There’s yogurt with grape compote, crunchy muesli, or fruit salad from a mason jar, and coffee from the Giamaica Caffè roastery in Verona.
- Manuel spent more than twenty years traveling the world as a maître d' and food and beverage manager. His experience benefits guests in the form of a selection of the finest products, from Slovenian ham to caciotta and provola, to the delight of every cheese lover.
- The hosts know the area like the back of their hand and have the best tips for hikes, special natural sites, and restaurants.
- The location in Val Gardena at the foot of the Sassolungo. Nestled between the Raschötz, Seceda, and Mont Seuc mountains, the bed and breakfast is located at an altitude of over 1,200 meters—the view is impressive!
Good to know
- Each of the twelve rooms is suitable for 1-2 people, ranging in size from fourteen to twenty-five square meters, and some have a balcony. The “Large Deluxe” room offers enough space for an extra cot.
- Breakfast is included in the price of the room, as is a ‘round-the-clock supply of fresh water from the Dolomites.
- The house bar is open daily from 4pm to 8pm, except on Tuesdays. Guests can also help themselves to drinks from the honesty bar at any time.
- The rooms deliberately do not have televisions, but they do have free WiFi and USB ports.
- Private outdoor parking spaces and a charging station for electric cars are available.
- The bed and breakfast is located on a quiet side street in the town center, just outside the pedestrian zone and only a few minutes' walk from the ski lifts.
- This is a great place to vacation all year round, especially if you enjoy sports. Depending on the season, you can enjoy hiking, cycling, skiing, and climbing.
- Guests receive the Val Gardena Mobilcard at check-in, which allows them to use all public buses and ski buses in Val Gardena free of charge.
- For day trippers, we recommend visiting the neighboring mountain valleys or taking a tour to Bolzano, about forty minutes away by car.
- The nearest airports are Bolzano or Innsbruck.
