Die Reederin
The stately home in Große Altefähre street in Lübeck has a long history. It goes back to 1790, when the foundation stone was laid for today’s hotel named “Die Reederin”. From 1868 to 2016, the building was owned by the F.H. Bertling shipping company. In 2017, Nina Dietze acquired the vacant cultural monument and thought: Perfect—perfect for a small hotel! And thus having long since gained experience in the areas of gastronomy, hotel business and event organization, she became the head of Die Reederin. She let herself be inspired by Skandi design in Sweden and Denmark, where she specifically searched for furnishing treasures that would make the hotel what it’s now become—a cozy, bright place with a feel-good factor. The combination of modern and old interior styles, which are inspired by Scandinavian living culture throughout, gives the rooms an extraordinary flair. The “Flitzihaus”, as Nina Dietze’s daughter christened the hotel (because it was so easy to flit around in the empty shell), offers guests seven rooms on three floors. They are called Dorothea, Helene, Catharine, Hilde, Ursula, Paula and Anni after the seven ships that once sailed for the F.H. Bertling shipping company. To pay due respect to the history of the house, real sea containers were installed in the bathrooms and the headboards of the beds were designed from former filing cabinets. Anyone who likes a Hanseatic attitude to life and Skandi style is in good hands here and can happily set sail in one of the rooms of “Die Reederin”. The heading? Full steam ahead to the perfect holiday feeling.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The building’s impressive history, having withstood significant historical turbulence, most notably two world wars.
- The successful combination of Hanseatic tradition and Scandinavian coziness
- The high quality standards running through the entire hotel—be it the color concept, the choice of bed linen or the ingredients for breakfast, everything is top-notch!
- The spacious rooms furnished with comfortable natural beds by COCO-MAT, featuring headboards made from the sliding doors of former shipping company filing cabinets.
- The cozy Cognac room between the first floor and the attic; it used to be the shipping company’s archive—today, you can relax there reading a book or drinking a glass of wine.
- The inviting breakfast room with adjoining terrace
- Suite Hilde—the honeymoon suite with a larger bathroom and a free-standing bathtub
- Suite Ursula—with two separate bedrooms and bathrooms making it ideal for a large family or two couples; the highlight—an exclusive recessed balcony, which used to be called “the ladies’ balcony”.
- The beautiful location in the heart of Lübeck on the wonderful Old Town Island, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
