D'Kammer

Filling the old with new life. That was Julia and Michael Staudinger’s idea when they transformed the farm on the outskirts of Illerbeuren in the Unterallgäu region—where Grandma Anna put her heart and soul into everything she did during her lifetime—into a retreat for their guests. Today, the historic walls house modern accommodation with a timeless design: A vacation home and five aparthotel-style apartments. During the redesign, the typical building culture of the farmhouse, barn and hayloft was preserved, while the interiors were given a minimalist Scandinavian-style look. Design classics, simple fixtures made of light spruce wood and a color palette of white and grey tones plus some striking color accents define the minimalist, cool ambience. A real favorite place for all those seeking relaxation who are enthusiastic about architecture and interior design. It’s somewhere to spend a weekend in beautiful nature alone or in a couple, to get together with family and friends, to take time to pause and enjoy extended yoga sessions—or to be creative together. A light-flooded, loft-like space has been created in the two-story barn, which is a wonderful place to work on new projects, ideas and challenges as part of workations or company retreats. If you need to take a break from work, you can play table football or boules, or enjoy the Finnish sauna in the garden before steaming off by the outdoor fire cube. Regardless of who you come with, everyone gets together for breakfast in the ‘Kammer Kafé’, the former dairy kitchen: In the slow food tradition, homemade jams are served here, along with Bircher made on site and individual creations such as the egg muffin with Allgäu mountain ham—so delicious that you’ll already be dreaming of the next morning in the evening.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The understated architecture and the beautifully simple interior design with selected classics and customized fixtures and kitchen units
  • In addition to the white-accentuated color selection, each apartment also has a bright color to add a striking accent, such as the fittings in the bathroom, individual textiles or paintwork in orange, pink, green or yellow.
  • All apartments have a private terrace, with the exception of apartment K 05, which has a great window seat—there’s also a terrace in front of the house for all guests.
  • There’s also a small shop offering a selection of fine things from regional producers who produce their organic food with love. In addition to snacks, coffee, tea and honey, there’s also a pizza basket with the basic ingredients for using the pizza oven and a Kässpatzen bowl with everything you need for the Swabian pasta classic.
  • Breathing courses, QiGong, health workshops and yoga retreats are offered in the beautiful attic under old beams with light from above and a view of the garden. In summer, the large sun terrace is a particularly good place to get into the flow.
  • The Iller beach is just a short five-minute walk away. The river with its jade-green water is perfect for cooling off, stand-up paddling or rowing and is popular for ice bathing in winter
  • Reading time! The library has a colorful selection of novels and literature on yoga, Ayurveda, cooking and architecture.
  • The barn can be used by all guests (if it hasn’t been booked exclusively) for cooking, eating, playing, chatting and socializing.
  • Sustainability is a top priority: The farm is run according to ecological standards, regional and seasonal specialties are served and the farm is also state-of-the-art in terms of energy efficiency.
  • The creative upcycling: The vintage family cupboard has been given a fresh coat of paint, and Grandma Anna’s kitchen table and her favorite bench are back in use. The walkway in the garden was made from old roof tiles.
  • When the outdoor kitchen is used for barbecues or the pizza oven is fired up on balmy evenings and the house is filled with delicious aromas

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • The vacation home with its three bedrooms can accommodate up to ten people, the apartments are suitable for one to four people, the three studio flats are perfect for couples and single travelers. The farm can also be rented in its entirety.
  • Each accommodation has a fully equipped kitchen with four induction hobs, fridge, dishwasher, including tabs, and a Mocca Master coffee machine for the finest coffee.
  • Breakfast is included, but you can also cater for yourself if you wish. But once you’ve had the pleasure, you’ll almost certainly decide in favor of the sensational d’Kammer creations.
  • Kids are welcome! From extra beds, high chairs, board games and books, craft sheds, Kettcar go-karts, handcarts and buggies through to sledges—the hosts have thought of everything. The orchard with nest swing, ground trampoline and the two wooden horses Lotti and Karotti offers plenty of space for little adventurers.
  • The pre-packed wellness bag can be found in the apartments, containing a bathrobe and sauna towel, yoga mat and belt from hejhej. For the sake of the environment, there are no bathing slippers.
  • The very comfortable natural mattresses and bedding come from the sleep manufacturer Prolana.
  • The beautiful organic linen bed clothing is from the linen manufacturer MOMM.
  • There’s never a dull moment here: The mountain lakes in the Alps are around 30 to 45 minutes’ drive away, the Illerbeuren open-air farm museum with a good restaurant is very close by and there’s a horse-drawn carriage company in the village that offers rides with picnics, plus great cycle paths right on the doorstep.
  • Meetings and work far away from everyday life? For up to 20 people, the Tenne, a loft-like common room, offers the perfect place to be creative together or to present or listen to a talk.
  • The hosts are closely networked with local event organizers who arrange activities such as alpaca or herb hikes, glass ball blowing, pottery, beer tastings, cheese making or chocolate seminars—also great as team events!
  • You can also get here by train: Memmingen train station is 20 kilometers away and there’s a bus service from there. You can also spend a few relaxing days here without a car. Shopping and nice places to eat are within walking distance; hiking trails start in the immediate vicinity.
  • Two e-charging points and a lockable bicycle garage are available.
  • The minimum stay is three nights.
