Gran Villa Palmera

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on the north-westernmost of the eight Canary Islands, La Palma, hides a real gem: Gran Villa Palmera, a spacious, energizing oasis, is located in Los Pedregales between palms several meters high and olive, avocado, almond and cypress trees . Hosts Bernd and Asgard have fallen in love with this place and are happy to share it with guests, as the conditions here are perfect all year round: It’s warm, sunny and sheltered from the wind. If the view of the outdoor area with garden, pool, outdoor daybed, Weber barbecue and yoga corner isn’t amazing enough, you’ll probably find yourself rubbing your eyes when you enter the stately colonial-style villa with all of its high-end furnishings. You’re welcomed into a hallway with ceilings over five meters high, stylish herringbone parquet flooring, a photo gallery and an illustrious collection of contemporary works of art. The accommodation was built in the 1980s as Villa Los Pedregales by an art-loving Palmero and was extensively renovated by the current owners in 2021/2022—the focus continuing to be on art. Wandering further inside, you’ll find a stylish mix of furniture classics by designers such as Eames, Mies van der Rohe and Gray and typical Palmero style elements. At the heart of it all is the colorful kitchen with direct access to the pool and terrace. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fireplace room and two lounges make the whole villa pure perfection. Once you’ve taken up residence here, there’s really no reason to leave the premises again that soon. That would be a shame, because this haven of peace is very close to the black sand beaches of the west coast, and the lively town of Los Llanos also has a lot to offer. A difficult decision for any guest ...

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The great hillside location, the tranquility and the picturesque ambience of the villa
  • During the renovation, great importance was attached not only to art, but also to modern technology and sustainability.
  • Many older elements and furniture were kept and mixed with modern classics of Brazilian Modernism and contemporary pop culture.
  • The approximately 2,500-square-meter garden is like a botanical treasure chest: Here you’ll find citrus fruits, figs, papayas, mangoes and avocados and sooo much more.
  • From the terrace, you can look out over the Atlantic and enjoy the world’s best sunsets.
  • Some rooms have the flair of an art museum: In the hallway, there’s a small gallery of contemporary black and white photographs with works by photo artists such as René Buri, Mick Rock, Mario Sorrenti, Dennis Stock, Olaf Heine and Mary McCartney; in the lounges and bedrooms, there are works by artists such as JR, Richard Phillips, Jonathan Meese, 4000, Jaybo Monk, Jim Avignon and KAWS.
  • Another highlight in the garden is the “Black Palm” sculpture, which was installed on site by British artist Douglas White especially for the Gran Villa Palmera in February 2022.
  • The bright kitchen is the focal point of the house and has direct access to the pool and terrace.
  • To cool off on hot days: Dive into the pool with counter-current system in the spacious garden (pool heating is available the other days).

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • The villa has three bedrooms with double beds and two bathrooms for a total of six guests.
  • The spacious villa is perfect for families and friends who want to explore the island together.
  • The villa is also suitable for older guests or guests with limited mobility.
  • Sustainability counts—the villa has its own photovoltaic system, a solar hot water system and an e-car charging station.
  • A private cleaning service can also be booked on request.
  • The house is well connected to the road network, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the island.
  • The beautifully situated Gran Plaza in Los Llanos de Aridane, with its old church and many cafés, restaurants and stores, is around 15 minutes’ walk away.
  • Those who love outdoor sports can use the pergola as a perfect yoga spot. There’s also some fitness equipment available such as mats, elastic resistance bands, hula hoops, a rowing machine—not forgetting the heated pool with counter-current system and the boules court.
  • Art lovers should definitely visit the 20/21 espacio de arte: In September 2023, a freely accessible private collection was opened in Tijarafe (25 minutes’ drive away), showcasing contemporary Spanish art from the 20th and 21st centuries.
  • Guests of the villa can rent e-cars from Monta at a discount.
