Les Abris Loctudy
A field in Brittany, plus two people with an idea: That’s how the story of Abris begins. Kristelle and Youenn inherited the 3,000-square-meter meadow property near Loctudy from their grandmother Mathilde, and decided to build three matte-black wooden cabins on it; modeled on Norwegian oyster huts, these are perched on stilts and connected by narrow walkways. The colorful beach towels drying in the sun on the porches and the SUP boards leaning against the house walls hint at just how close the coast is: A four-minute walk along a narrow path, and you’re at Plage de Lodonnec with its fine white sand. The tiny houses themselves are just 50 square meters in size, but cleverly laid out on two levels with a living room, kitchen, two bedrooms, and a bathroom—add to that floor-to-ceiling windows, pale wood, wicker furniture, natural tones, and here and there a pop of mustard-yellow or bright-blue. A large hammock spans the living room; with a bit of luck, you might even get to lie in it yourself, provided there are no children in the house (if there are, it will already be taken). In the bay window, there’s a bench for reading, in the corner, a pellet stove to warm up after enjoying water sports. For those who want to try their hand at surfing, an excellent opportunity awaits just a 15-minute drive away: Pointe de la Torche is considered Brittany’s most famous surf spot—for beginners and pros alike. But no matter if you were out on the board in the morning or have just taken a stroll along the beach, when the smell of the barbecue drifts over from the terrace in the evening, you’ll be glad to be back in your lodge—for fresh lobsters from the harbor, served with a sea breeze under a starry sky.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The ecolodges were designed to blend naturally into the landscape. Eco-friendly construction was very important to the hosts, so the houses were built using a wood-frame construction with natural insulation made of cellulose and wood wool, based on a design by the architectural firm L’Atelier d’Ici.
- Every room has been carefully thought out, with natural materials and local craftsmanship, creating an authentic, relaxed beach house atmosphere.
- The clean-line and simply beautiful design with built-in features made of pressed wood
- The large, suspended hammock net above the living room, ideal for reading and daydreaming
- The fact that Lodonnec’s sandy beach is just 400 meters away and easily accessible on foot
- Stepping barefoot onto the wooden deck in the morning, already warmed by the sun, and enjoying the first coffee of the day in the open air
- Since the ecolodges are situated in the heart of a three-hectare, protected forest, this place offers the perfect break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
- The fact that you can also spend a getaway here in the fall or winter, enjoying walks by the sea, evenings by the fireplace, or strolls through Pont-l’Abbé, where you can feast on oysters and scallops
- The lovely surroundings! Worthwhile excursions include a trip to the Île Tudy peninsula or the picture-perfect seaside resort of Bénodet. In the port of Loctudy, you can watch the fishermen at work or enjoy the view of Langoz Beach while eating a crêpe.
