Moulin Moulin und Maison du Meunier
The light, the expansive views, wide natural beaches, sand dunes, seaside resorts, authentic fishing villages—the Opal Coast in France’s north has its very own charm. Its name is no coincidence, like a glowing opal, this region offers a rich play of colors. Sometimes it shimmers gray, then blue, but also amber, green and even red and orange. With the tides on the English Channel, the light conditions change regularly, revealing completely different sides of the natural coastline. It’s not surprising that people lose their heart to this area. After several years of living in the city, Jérémy and Nicolas wanted to move to the countryside and enjoy nature and the seasons more. They found their happiness on a property with a former flour mill surrounded by an impressively beautiful park. A large pond lies at one end and adds to the tranquil atmosphere that prevails around the house. Four guest rooms in the main house, two studios in the outbuilding and a private cottage are available for rent. The two hosts have a fantastic eye for detail, mixing design classics with vintage finds, family heirlooms, and collectibles. A few floral highlights skillfully set the tone. Everything has a personal style—classy, refined, balanced and yet eye-catching. For the color scheme, the homeowners were inspired by their new home and chose natural tones. Taking nature as the new focal point in life has worked out well and the seasons can be experienced wonderfully in their new home. The two hosts enjoy the daily play of shadow and light, the seasonal change of colors and the regular bounty from their garden and Nicolas and Jérémy are more than happy to share their new sense of contentment with guests!
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The beautifully landscaped and spacious garden with water mill and lake with its own sun deck!
- Everything is designed with natural materials and colors, black is used as a sophisticated contrast color.
- The extremely successful mix of vintage pieces, modern classics and contemporary details
- The knack someone has for beautiful fabrics and materials—evident as soon as you enter the house.
- The arrangement of artfully shaped vases, flowerpots and plants in the entrance hall, which look like a still life.
- Mirror, mirror on the wall—one or two vintage mirrors are to be found in this house.
- The eye is drawn to the pond from everywhere, every room has a garden view.
- not to be missed, the homemade breakfast with vegetarian or vegan dishes, the highlight being the homemade jams—to name a few, wild blackberry and elderberry, plum and lavender, quince and currant
- Feeling at home in the communal lounge with fireplace, the cozy sofa corner and a selection of coffee table books
- Nicolas and Jérémy are fantastic and helpful hosts
- Don’t forget to say hello to your fellow guests—the chickens!
GOOD TO KNOW:
- Adults and children from 14 years are welcome.
- On the second floor “live the grannies”—all four double rooms are named after the grandmothers of the two hosts and lovingly dedicated to them: Anne-Marie, Nina, Élia, Claude.
- The two studios, Petite Boudeuse (18 square meters) and Grande Boudeuse (25 square meters), are located in the annex of the house and both have their own terrace.
- Breakfast is included for the guest rooms of the main house and is served as a buffet; in the studios, you can order a breakfast basket, which will be brought to your room.
- The Maison du Meunier is a small separate cottage on the grounds, built in the same architectural style as the main house. It accommodates up to four adults and can be booked for a minimum of four nights.
- The cottage offers added privacy with its own terrace, fire pit, and barbecue – perfect for guests seeking a more secluded stay. Please note that the park and communal areas in the main house are reserved for room guests.
- In the evening there is an aperitif with a snack platter—on request a small aperitif or picnic. The basket can be packed or you can order a seafood or oyster platter from the fishmongers in the area.
- There is a separate room for massages, if booked—tips and contacts are provided by the hosts.
- Moulin Moulin in Dannes is located 22 kilometers from the harbor town of Boulogne-sur-Mer, which has a beautiful old town and numerous restaurants
- From the house you can hike over the Dunes du Mont Saint-Frieux to the beach.
- You can reach the seaside resort of Sainte-Cécile in 15 minutes by bike, the beach is 3 kilometers away.
- The Opal coast has some interesting little towns to offer. Le Touquet is international and elegant, colorful bathing houses adorn Malo-les-Bains near Dunkerque and the fishing village of Wimereux is very family-friendly.
- A popular destination on the coast are the two “nose tips” that curiously poke out toward England. Cap Gris Nez (cape gray nose) is 45 kilometers from the hotel and the impressive white chalk cliffs of Cap Blanc Nez (cape white nose) 49 kilometers.
- “Moule Frites, s'il vous plait” - fresh fish and seafood are the classic produce of the area
- Numerous remnants like bunkers and bomb craters bear witness to the last two world wars in this area.
