Palazzo Saetta
Home to a pretty harbor, long sandy beaches, and the kind of sunsets you find on postcards, Gallipoli is understandably one of the better-known places in Salento. The fact that Nardò, the second baroque town of Salento after Lecce, lies less than twenty minutes inland is something fewer travelers know. All the better for those who do. After all, the town has winding alleys, magnificent palazzi, and Piazza Salandra—one of the most beautiful squares in Apulia, where it feels like the whole of Nardò gathers in the evening. In the middle of this old town, a few steps from Piazza Salandra, the pink façade of Palazzo Saetta sits on a small, quiet square. Saetta means lightning and although the name most likely traces back to a certain Signor Saetta who acquired the house roughly a hundred years ago, it could hardly be more fitting. Some love affairs do begin like that. The current owners had only intended to view the property; they found a seventeenth-century palazzo, weathered and neglected, and bought it anyway. Or perhaps for that very reason. The restoration was carried out with one aim: To keep the character intact. Living in this historic palazzo is something best discovered with the whole family or a large group of friends: six bedrooms with vaulted ceilings, named after their colours, two kitchens, a long antique table on the ground floor beneath the original barrel vault, and a courtyard with orange trees and a natural stone pool that no one would suspect from the street. A house for those who know that the best part of travelling is often a shared lunch that runs on a little too long—ideally al fresco.
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The pink façade with Renaissance details, glowing on a small shaded piazzetta among benches and trees
- How the air turns cool and quiet the moment you step through the entrance gate
- The way the palazzo combines a historic structure with present-day comfort—thick stone walls, a two-story loggia with rounded arcades, vaulted ceilings, white stucco arches, all enhanced by warm tones, soft fabrics and furniture with character
- How each of the six rooms has its own flair, shaped by the color of its painted ceiling—from the pink master bedroom with its boudoir shower to the white room with a fireplace
- A love of materials and craftsmanship that shows in the details—handmade ceramics, custom-made furnishings
- The cool, shaded dining room downstairs, with the courtyard in view—a blessing on hot days
- The stone pool beneath the orange trees, invisible from the street and hard to leave once you are inside
- A courtyard that invites leisurely reading and aperitivo, with tables, loungers and plenty of shade even in midsummer
- Coffee at any hour from the espresso machine downstairs—the first caffè before breakfast or the last one after dinner
- Only a hundred meters from Piazza Salandra, and still quiet enough to count the strokes of the church bells
- The scent of almond pastries from the nearby cafés drifting through the garden
- Nardò still counts among the Salento's best-kept secrets—when out for dinner, you’ll sit alongside families from the neighborhood.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- The palazzo has six rooms, each with its own bathroom and named after its color: Red (40 square meters, with a sofa bed for two), pink (with a bathtub), blue (30 square meters, with eastern accents), white (22 square meters, with a fireplace), ochre (14 square meters) and green (32 square meters, with a lounge area).
- The house accommodates up to 13 people—ideal for family gatherings, friends' getaways, working weeks with or without colleagues, or other shared escapes.
- On the first floor, there is a very well-equipped kitchen with its own dining area.
- Porto Selvaggio nature reserve, with its rugged cliffs and turquoise coves, is about fifteen kilometers away, and is one of the more striking stretches of coast in Apulia.
- Gallipoli is twenty minutes by car, baroque Lecce around thirty.
- Piazza Salandra with the Guglia dell’Immacolata, the cathedral and a number of palazzi can all be reached on foot through the old town.
- A car is useful for excursions along the coast. In Nardò itself, the best way to get around is by walking.
- The nearest airport is Brindisi (around 55 kilometers). Bari lies roughly 130 kilometers to the north.
