St. Oak Apartments
As soon as you open the heavy oak front door, you might find yourself dropping your luggage in amazement, plopping down on one of the steps, and just sitting there and imagining who might have walked up and down them since the place was built in 1911. With the help of a restorer, the staircase of the listed townhouse in Kyritz, Brandenburg, has been given back its original color scheme. The blue wall tiles, the windows from the Art Nouveau period and the entrance hall with its elegant wooden banister have remained true to the original and have been preserved over the years. However, the impressive entrance is just a foretaste of what awaits guests on the upper floor of the historic building, which was a commercial and agricultural bank in former East Germany times. Here is a vacation apartment that Berlin photographer Laura and stylist Nora have created with their great knack for design: A spacious loft in which yesterday and today merge beautifully, brought together with brass, marble, and sepia tones—and outside the 200-year-old peace oak, which can be seen from almost every window. It gives the accommodation its name for good reason, as it lends it a different atmosphere depending on the season. But you can also make yourself comfortable outside—in the charming inner courtyard with a seating area and outdoor kitchen. This is where you can dine al fresco, get together over a glass of wine and rave about your favorite places in the area with the other guests. For example, the nearby Kyritzer Untersee, a wonderful lake to go for a walk, swim, hire pedalos or rowing boats or cross over to the quaint excursion restaurant “INSL” situated on a mini island to eat burgers, tarte flambée and ice cream. Sounds idyllic? It is!
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The sage green kitchen from deVOL kitchens in shaker style with worktops and island made of Carrara marble. Even those who never cook might be inspired to grab some utensils and give it a go here.
- The 100-square-meter open space for sleeping, living, eating and cooking, featuring herringbone oak parquet flooring to create a feel-good atmosphere
- It’s not unusual for guests to be so enchanted by the tiled splashback in the kitchen that they can’t help but run a finger over it—simply stunning! The white Zellige tiles are handmade, and it’s precisely the imperfect surface that makes them so perfect.
- You can walk in the footsteps of the past while enjoying utmost modern comforts at the same time.
- Finally, time to read! Where could this be more comfortable (and undisturbed) than in the reading corner with sheepskin armchairs? Of course!
- The citrus scent of Frama’s “Herbarium” hand wash with notes of orange, rose, juniper and ho wood
- The historic building is located directly on Kyritz’s market square with the best view of the leisurely small town life and the town hall.
- After a good 90 minutes by car or train from Berlin’s main station, you will find yourself in another world. Slow down and enjoy the peace and quiet!
- More apartments are to be renovated and opened soon—that can only be a good thing!
GOOD TO KNOW:
- The apartment is 160 square meters and accommodates four people.
- There are two 180-centimeter-wide box-spring beds in the loft, one in the separate bedroom and one in the open-plan living area. Pillows and comforters are allergy-friendly, covers and sheets are made of linen.
- The bedroom has a free-standing bathtub and an en-suite WC with underfloor heating. The bathroom has a walk-in shower and underfloor heating.
- The designer kitchen not only looks good, but is also equipped with everything you need: Induction hob, oven, fridge, dishwasher, portafilter machine, high-quality pots and pans, coffee maker, Vitamix, hand mixer, blender, waffle iron and kitchen scales.
- It’s clear that a dream kitchen like this needs to be used and enjoyed. Fresh ingredients for your favorite recipes are always available at the local weekly market on Tuesdays and Fridays.
- Coffee, salt and pepper, sugar, spices, olive oil and vinegar (all organic) can be crossed off the shopping list, as they are already available in the kitchen.
- The accommodation has four bicycles available for exploring the town and the surrounding area.
- You can walk to the local ice cream parlor and a small organic grocery store—there are also large supermarkets nearby.
- Well-behaved dogs are welcome; dog baskets in various sizes and bowls are available on request.
- Just get here first! It’s a good 5-minute walk from Kyritz train station to St. Oak. If you arrive by car, it’s best to unpack at the front door and then park your car in the free “Wässering” parking lot. From there, it’s only a few minutes’ walk to the accommodation.
