The Net Store

Iona Livingstone’s love of the sea runs in the family. Her ancestors went to sea for generations. Most recently, her grandfather Malcom ran a fishing net business right on the water. He mended his nets on Loch Torridon and set sail almost daily in his fishing boat—the Seaflower—to catch herring. The vacation home “The Net Shore” is located on the same spot today. Black and white photos on the walls are reminders of Malcom Livingstone and his crew. They contribute to the authentic atmosphere of the house, which opens a new chapter in the family history with its modern architecture. The vacation home is located just outside the tranquil fishing village of Ardheslaig, right on the water’s edge, and celebrates the spectacular sea views with its open, bright architecture. On a clear day, guests can see across the strait known as “The Minch” to the Hebridean Islands through the fully glazed south side. Hostess Iona Livingstone is happy to share her enthusiasm for the wild nature of her homeland, which she returned to with her husband and two children after various professional stints elsewhere. In the open-plan kitchen of “The Net Shore” with the dining and living room, there’s plenty of space for shared activities while a fire crackles in the open fireplace. The double height room creates a generous feeling of space. The recessed mezzanine is designed as a versatile retreat for yoga, meditation, reading or computer work. In the surrounding area, visitors can go hiking in the Torridon Mountains. For those who prefer things a little flatter, there are numerous coastal trails, not to mention the many sporting opportunities on and near the water. Seals, seabirds and otters are just some of the wild animals that like to show themselves to visitors in this pristine environment. Their activities can be observed from behind panoramic windows, as can the constantly changing, dramatic spectacle of wind, waves and clouds (binoculars are provided for a better view). The architecture, the bay and the wild beauty of this area are simply breathtaking.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST:

  • The fantastic view of the sea through the large glass window front
  • A vacation at “The Net Store” is the perfect balance of relaxation in a luxurious vacation home and outdoor activity.
  • Despite the rugged nature, there’s no need to compromise on comfort. Neff appliances and a Quooker boiling water tap in the kitchen, super-comfortable beds from Hypnos and a Bette bathtub are designed to pamper guests.
  • The surroundings are a dream for Scotland enthusiasts. The coast road to Applecross is renowned for its magnificent views. The nearby Pass of the Cattle has the steepest road climb in the UK.
  • The rugged landscape inspires many artists. There are plenty of galleries and studios in the area.
  • Iona is the perfect contact person for guests as she knows the region inside out and is happy to give tips.
  • The furnishings in natural tones and with lots of wood create a warm, relaxing atmosphere.
  • Both the construction and the furnishings of the low-energy house follow sustainable standards. The electricity comes exclusively from renewable energies.
