Villa Fluggi
Stepping through the wrought-iron entrance gate, it’s a bit like passing through a magical portal and landing in the middle of the 1960s. You’re greeted by an enchanting garden (800 square meters) and a jewel of brick, stone, concrete and marble: Villa Fluggi. It’s located in the most beautiful area of the historic spa town of Merano in Obermais—a place that the nobility discovered for themselves as a refuge in the 19th century. This is also impressively demonstrated by the stately Art Nouveau houses in the immediate vicinity, idyllically framed by mountain peaks and vineyards. The villa impresses with its 270 square meters spread over three floors. Doors are flung wide open, sunbeams dance through the windows, and palm trees, pine trees and poplars tower in front. It’s like living in an art gallery; retro is the credo and design fans will hardly believe their eyes. In addition to a collection of around 114 works of art, the furnishings also include genuine interior classics that determine the extraordinary flair of the entire accommodation. Until recently, the villa belonged to Tyler Brûlé, the founder of the news and lifestyle magazine Monocle. With a whole team of architects and craftsmen and the South Tyrolean designer Harry Thaler, he renovated the building in just half a year. In 2019, everything passed into the hands of Carmen and Klaus Alber. The owners of Merano’s boutique hotel Miramonti are hosts with heart and soul, have already stopped off in many countries for inspiration and are now enabling their guests to do the almost impossible—travel back in time to an era when people first walked on the moon. WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The spaciousness of the entire area—five bedrooms, two living rooms, one study, one reading room and one children’s room, three bathrooms, a kitchen and two sunny balconies as well as two terraces and a huge garden offering plenty of free space and retreat options.
- The Sixties spirit hidden in every detail of Villa Fluggi—the legendary interior including remarkable vintage design from a Lobmeyr chandelier to a Florence Knoll sofa, a record player by Braun to an old Bell Canada telephone or a hand-drawn sketch by Oscar Niemeyer.
- The kitchen with beverage taps and its own Villa Fluggi wine cellar
- The well-equipped bar cabinet by Harry Thaler, made of oak, marble and cast iron—and specially made for Villa Fluggi
- The huge garden with subtropical plants, herb corner and Finnish sauna with wood stove as well as outdoor showers (also designed by Harry Thaler)
- At night you can listen to the gentle rustling of the palm leaves with the windows open.
- If required, you can book a nanny service, a personal guide for excursions or fitness workouts, and a chef to prepare a three-course lunch or dinner
