Schicker Auftritt! Über eine Holzbrücke, die über den Baseler Albanteich führt, betritt man die ehemalige „Rote Fabrik“, heute eine Jugendherberge. Draußen plätschert der Kanal unter der Brücke, das Haus mit seiner rot verputzten Fassade strahlt Ruhe aus. Drinnen aber wuselt es: Ein junges Pärchen checkt ein, einige Gäste sitzen noch beim Frühstück hinten im ehemaligen Färberkeller, in der Eingangshalle lesen die einen Stadtpläne, die anderen Kinderbücher und eine Radlergruppe packt seine Satteltaschen zusammen. Das Besondere an dieser Jugendherberge? Romantischer Blick, historische Gemäuer und innovative Architektur. Die Weite, Offenheit und Großzügigkeit des Hauses sind äußerst einladend. Von der Anmeldung – gleichzeitig auch Bar – schaut man an der Lounge vorbei bis in den Speiseraum, an den wiederum eine große Holzterrasse anschließt mit – klar! – Blick auf den Albanteich. Die verwendeten Materialien sind robust und roh, gleichzeitig aber auch zeitlos, schlicht und modern. Die „Rote Fabrik“ ist eine ehemalige Seiden-Produktionsstätte. Nach einer Hoch-Zeit Mitte des 19. Jahrhundert, ebbte die Nachfrage nach dem edlen Stoff nach und nach ab. Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts schloss die Fabrik dann ihre Pforten. Lange Zeit stand das Gebäude leer, verfiel immer mehr und wurde 1975 schließlich zum Abbruch frei gegeben. Doch die Christoph-Merian-Stiftung rettete das geschichtsträchtige Haus vor dem Abriss und beschloss, es zu einer Jugendherberge umzubauen. Die Fassade wurde erhalten, das Innere entkernt und umgebaut. 2009/10 beauftragte die Stiftung das Büro Buchner Bründler mit einem weiteren Umbau und was dabei nach einer Erweiterung des Gebäudes herauskam, kann sich sehen lassen: die perfekte Kombination aus Tradition und offener, moderner Architektur und Einrichtung, aus unkomplizierter Nutzung und elegantem Design.

What we like:

• the small wooden bridge leading across the St. Alban pond to the entrance
• the different areas flow smoothly into each other, everything is interconnected and therefore appears very open and inviting
• raw but beautiful: exposed concrete, unplastered masonry, raw steel, oak wood and glazed plywood were used
• the furniture is functional and aesthetically pleasing at the same time: leather benches, light tables, some chairs by designer Jean Prouvé
• the colorful mix of guests
• well equipped for all: for children there is a play corner, for cyclists a lockable bicycle cellar, lockers (also for large luggage) are available free of charge
• the terrace with a view of the St. Alban pond
• in the great window niche in the hall you can read or dream comfortably
• the corner rooms in the rear extension with the floor-to-ceiling windows - here you almost sleep as if you were living in the trees

good to know:

• there are single, double and shared rooms: with shared bathroom or single and double rooms with shower in the room - there is something for every taste and need
• Breakfast (with delicious Bircher muesli!) is included; dinner costs extra, but is also worth it
• the picturesque and historical old town of Basel is easily accessible from here, the Rhine is only a few steps away and is perfect for walks
• the hostel is also suitable for wheelchair users
• the Basel Card is free of charge - with it you can use the guest wifi and especially the public transport; further discounts for Basel sights are also available with it
• who arrives in a team and professionally: there are bright seminar rooms for meetings - on request also with cheese fondue...
• a visit to the old paper mill just five minutes from the hostel is well worth it - a fun hands-on museum!
• Incidentally, the "Red Factory" was already one step ahead when it was founded: Founded in the mid-19th century as a home for Sarasin and Co.'s silk factory, it also housed a small private gasworks that not only generated enough energy for itself and another factory, but also for the surrounding streetlights
