Hotel Schwarzschmied
The South Tyrolean hotelier family Dissertori is fully committed to the beautiful (and sustainable) elements of their South Tyrolean wonderland with passion and a big heart. They would like to pass this passion on to their guests and, ideally, inspire them to live their lives in a more conscious way in the future. “Hotel for the Art of Living” is what Hotel Schwarzschmied calls itself, and it has an extensive range on offer for stress relief and the art of living well ready for its guests. The contents: Holistic wellness, sophisticated design, top-class art and local slow-food cuisine—and, of course, the fabulous natural surroundings that start right outside the hotel doors. Nature was also the greatest source of inspiration for the modernization of the hotel, which was undertaken in stages beginning in 2014, and for the new extension with the beautiful name “Glücksschmiede ( bliss foundry)”. Everywhere you are surrounded by bright natural tones, sustainable materials and of course a lot of local wood. A special highlight are the 75-square-meter rooftop suites in the main building. The view from here is stunning! In 2019, they were awarded a German Design Award. So everything must have been done right!
WHAT WE LIKE MOST:
- The location close to nature—the hotel is idyllically surrounded by vines, gnarled fruit trees and the hotel’s own 17th-century Schwarzbauergarten (smithy’s garden).
- Nature also plays the starring role in the interiors—lots of wood, light natural tones and traditional shapes characterize the spacious rooms.
- The hosts skilfully combine alpine tradition and authenticity with a modern and urban design and lifestyle aesthetic.
- Much of the furniture was specially designed by the Merano interior design studio biquadra and crafted by a local carpenter. The South Tyrolean designer Harry Thaler also designed parts of the furnishings, e.g. lamps in the public areas and in the rooms.
- The floor-to-ceiling windows offer the finest of mountain panoramas.
- The open fireplace with comfortable armchairs around it is great for cooler days.
- Endless relaxation can be found in the 1000-square-meter spa area—body and soul can be well cared for (yoga, massages, balance spa, spacious relaxation areas with library, sauna area with Finnish panorama sauna, outdoor sauna with steam bath, open fireplaces, outdoor relaxation garden—you name it, they have it).
- Watch the sunrise in winter from the heated outdoor pool—it will give you goosebumps and not because you’re cold!
- The art is also local and comes from the Lananer artist Hannes Eggers.
- It’s a great starting point from which to reach all of the natural wonders of the Merano region. Even if you don’t really want to leave the hotel, the surrounding area offers so much beauty and beckons you to hike and explore.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- There’s something for everyone—from the 36-square-meter double rooms to the 50 square meter Garden Suites and the new 75-square-meter rooftop suites.
- Children are welcome—there are family rooms for up to five people.
- New floors, beds and, above all, new art by the artist from Lana, Hannes Egger: In 2025, all rooms in the Schwarzschmied Residence, which is directly adjacent to the main building, were redesigned.
- The hotel’s restaurant La Fucina delights with inspiring slow-food dishes, vegan dishes are also available. The ingredients are regional, some as local as the hotel’s kitchen garden.
- There’s even an in-house pasta factory!!!
- Light bites, long drinks and wines from South Tyrol can be tasted in the bar or bistro La Luce.
- Guests can hire bicycles free of charge or e-bikes for a fee.
- You can take part in two yoga sessions a day, if you like, and if that’s not enough, there’s a yoga mat in every room.
- You can be pampered with massages and cosmetic treatments, and you’ll find Susanne Kaufmann care products in the rooms. The treatments in the new outdoor spaces by designer Harry Thaler are particularly exciting.
- Hiking, mountain biking, and skiing in winter—the Merano region offers lots of sporting activities. Here you’ll find unspoiled valleys such as the Val d'Altimo and Val Passiria, and nature parks such as the Texelgruppe and the adjacent Stelvio National Park. Cyclists love the winding road up to the Gampenpass, and just beyond it, less than thirty kilometers from Lana, lie the Nonsberg mountain range and Trentino.
- Arrival by train is possible; the nearest airports are in Innsbruck, Verona, Bergamo and Milan.
- Pssst—the other wonderful houses of the Dissertori family are also very beautiful: Parkhotel Mondschein, Villa Arnica and 1447 Reichhalter
